My latest gear purchasing consists of a dedicated digital recording computer and interface...plus a great little class D Ampeg bass amp. These require that I do all the work or they just sit there.

+1 jdedinite. i also know a number of guys who have ever-evolving, very expensive systems who actually own or listen to very little music and/or have only casual knowledge of music. you get the feeling that it's all about the buying and selling and not about the actual listening.

Some people I think are audiophiles for gear. I know too many guys who seem to either buy and sell more gear or built their own gear rather than listen to music. They spend more time, auditioning, buying, selling and tweaking rather than listening to music. They change gear like socks.
