Any tweaks I'm missing?

I have lots of ’tweaks’ added to my system.

Is there anything I’m missing?

A small cupboard, so no power conditioner possible.

A smallish budget, so most probably no Gate to try.

One small request...

Can the negative knobs please refrain from commenting.

I’m not interested in what you think of me, the products you have not tried, or my spending habits.

Only those who have experiences of possible additions, would be much appreciated.

So much of this hobby isn’t about if you can hear or not ... but whether or not you know what to listen FOR.

Right. Exactly.

Unless, well kind of hesitant to bring it up. But what if there are people who really don’t care all that much for the whole listening to music aspect of it? Would they put much effort into learning what to listen for? Probably not. And, okay another one, what if there are people who think all that really matters is the sale? Speakers, amps, ideas, its all the same. When you’re selling. Nobody gives a you know what about truth, reason, when there’s a sale to be made. Heck for all we know there may be some out there so bent on winning nothing else matters they’ll skip right past even pretending to have something helpful to contribute and go straight on to the personal insults.

Nah. Nevermind. Couldn’t be anyone like that. Not around here.

Yeah, what to listen for. Good one. ;)
discopants- A good experiment to try is play your system moderate volume and pinch the speaker cable going in to your speakers between your thumb and forefinger to feel the vibrations. Then use a 1cm wide piece of the thin tape around the speaker cable and try again you will barely detect any vibration.

The combined effect if used correctly through the signal path (I.e power supply to speakers) is super stereo imaging and lower noise floor.

Experiment! Love it! I'll try it tonight!

One of the greatest yet seldom mentioned benefits of tweaking is the way it forces you to listen and evaluate. Tweaks are misunderstood. Tweaks do not "make" your system sound better. YOU make your system sound better by using the right tweaks the right way.

My very first tweak was a phone book (remember those?) placed under my CD player. Had to strain and concentrate but the subtle improvement was there. Put another one on top, strain and concentrate and yeah, another barely perceptible improvement. Probably nobody else would ever notice, improvement so slight only probably only being intimately familiar with the system let me even hear it at all. Not putting it out there as a recommended tweak, that's for sure, but as a listening exercise. Because then later when I heard BDR Cones, WOW! Now THAT'S a TWEAK! And being already used to listening and evaluating so closely it was a wealth of new characteristics to work on.
beernut:
I have found most "tweaks" make little if any audible improvement in sound.

Right. So here's what happens, or at least can happen, or at least is what I have actually seen happen. Person starts out not even able to hear something as obvious as the difference between a budget and really good CD player. That was me. Could not hear it at all. Not even a little. Really puzzled me how some could be so weird as to say there was a difference, when clearly there was not. And, they MEASURED the same. So clearly these people were nuts. This was 1990, give or take.

Only I really love music. Gradually dawns on me there really is a difference. There are differences. Became aware. One day guy swaps carbon fiber footers under a speaker. Well now, actually heard a difference. Wife was there, sort of heard it, maybe. One day after doing something like oh say ten times the footer thing she's all wow I didn't think it could sound any better but it does.

So what most likely is going on is the same sound changes are there regardless, only the more skilled listeners pick up on it a lot easier and sooner and at the smaller levels. Or another way to look at it, there is always some gross level at which the improvement is massive enough everyone says wow that's amazing. Everyone. Which I know, because I been there quite some time now. Years.

Well so here's the thing. If you want to get there, or even if just a little better is enough, or even if you just want to get the most out of what you got, the most for the least money, whatever measure it is absolutely does not matter the better you listen the faster you get there. Period.

And so unless you want to try and be happy right where you are, or maybe don't even care- unlikely, and freaking odd beyond strange, considering where you are!- then unless that's the case far from spending your time questioning or justifying not doing anything to get there- like tweaking- you will be a lot better off learning to listen. And paying attention to threads like this and trying the tweaks is one of the best ways to practice.
One of my most extraordinary tweaks cost peanuts...

And this most extraordinary of tweaks was.....???
Wow. I mean, not bad. I'd go BDR Cones over Vibrapod, try em if you want more a more dynamic presentation. But ..., you asked for additions:

Cable Elevators. Doesn't have to be the brand name stuff. Cable Elevators are really just ceramic insulators. Buy Cable Elevators if you want that particular look and want them to all look exactly the same. Otherwise go on eBay search ceramic insulators, you'll find exact same as Cable Elevators plus a whole bunch more. I've tried and compared, only real difference is dimensions, shape, color, they all work great. Use them under speaker cables, power cords, interconnects. Much more effective than other things like wood, plastic, etc. All of which work. Just nowhere near as well as ceramic.

XLO Test CD- has demagnetizing tracks that really work. There's other CDs with the same idea. Have not compared. XLO, one track is a sweep tone, the other a bass fade. I copied mine onto a CD and duped the tracks so it plays several times while the system warms up. If you've never demagnetized like this let your system warm up, have a good listen, then run the tracks and listen again. The longer its been the greater the improvement. I do mine every week or so, and every time I want it to sound really good.

Radio Shack Bulk Tape Eraser- these used to be readily available for $20, now hard to find and getting up there, but they come up on Amazon. Or any large powerful demagnetizer. Used on records (yes- I report what I hear and leave it to others to explain why it works, or doesn't, it being after all impossible to demagnetize vinyl) and CDs just before play. If used on a CD you may notice the improvement particularly in top end clarity and reduced haze dissipates after a while. But only if you listen real close. I told a friend who hadn't noticed, then said wow you're right. Perfect for records as it lasts just about long enough for a side.

Also works great on cables. Only problem is with cables you have to go slow and the unit gets hot and after thermal shutdown can take 20 min or so to cool and work again. If you get one after a while you'll figure out what you can do and not do to get the most out of it. I do records every side, cables a little less often.

Static Guard anti-static spray. Ordinary laundry anti-static spray. Spray this over your cables and even with zero noticeable static electricity you will hear a cleaner, blacker presentation. Again, the longer between uses the more you notice the improvement.

Okay now for the big guns-

Synergistic PHT, ECT & HFT. PHT come in different versions or flavors. Black Widow is the most neutral safest bet. Green Dream is super liquid, like that one a lot too. I have two GD and one BW on my Conqueror arm. ECT, two of those on the arm base, one on the motor, three on my amp, couple more inside my Herron phono stage. ECT are so amazing I pull the one off my motor stick it on my laptop and movies take on an impressive near 3D quality, like going from 1080i to 4K.

HFT, HFTX, HFT Wide Angle, Speaker Kit, I have them all. Don't know which is more amazing, the way moving one even an inch makes a difference easy to hear, or that they work at all. Ted's placement suggestions are spot on. Tried others, nowhere near as effective. The upper ones on the front wall, depending on where you put them, you can fine tune the amount of sizzle on cymbals. A tweakers wet dream!
