I have purchased and used 3 new pairs of ASL poweramps. My first was Explorer 805 SETs that I sold after buying less-sensitive speakers. Then I bought a pair of Hurricanes that I still have. Both of these I improved substantially.

I now have a pair of new-version AQ1006/845 SETs that sound VERY good with my home-made line-array speakers, seen here

I believe that ASL products used to be fair-to-good products that were good values. Over the years, they've turned into good-to-excellent products that are still very good values. I've seen improvements in design and workmanship in the progression of my 3 pairs. They all have sounded at least very good in stock condition, and they respond very well to improving parts quality.

If the 1500 meets your requirements, don't be apprehensive about it; PROBABLY it'll be a fine amp.

These are solid pieces for the most part with well thought out topography and conservatively driven tubes unlike some builders who drive them too hard for dynamics. The smaller amps usually sound better than the larger one. Good luck.
