I was still in high school and my girlfriend and I went to see Sly and the Family Stone at Kent State memorial gym. They were like 2 hours or more late to start the show. 
But they did put on a fabulous performance.  
Rumor was they had partied a bit too hard early in the day/night before and needed to recoup. This was 1971 or 72 the days before cell phones. Our parents never said a word to us about getting back in the wee hours.  
Ticket prices… a high school kid working part time at a gas station could afford two tickets. 
May he RIP. He sure took a royal screwing trying to get paid.
