AES v. XLR - what is the difference?

Is there a difference between a single XLR analog interconnect and a digital AES cable? is it a M-F thing, or an impedance thing? or something else entirely?

just wondering.

I am looking for a DAC with AES to go with a Theta transport, and was just looking at the connector on the transport and my XLR cables.

thanks-

the more I thought about it, I realized my question was probably pretty lame. All RCA jacked cables are not the same. all BNC 'd cables are not the same. All RJ45'd cables are not the same.. duh! The connectors are actually quite supericial to what a cable does. I need to remember that.
An AES/EBU cable is specifically designed to present a 110 ohm load. Do not use a standard balanced cable.
