7.1 versus 2 channel analog

If I watch a dvd or bluray movie only using the 2 channel analog stereo outputs of the bluray player connected to, the right and left channel inputs of, a pre-amp which is connected to a 2 channel amplifier, connected to 2 front speakers, will all the sound be heard? Or will anything be missing, like what is heard on a center channel speaker?

Depends on the choice of soundtrack (stereo vs. mch) and the particular player.

It's a little like Humpty-Dumpty. Even if you have the player send you stereo (with the other channels folded in), you cannot derive the original center channel post hoc. It really makes no sense to mix down to stereo if you are going to try to expand it again.
