How Did Your First Audiophile Experience Impact Your Audio Journey?
Three quick stories… In the 60s my folks had the requisite Sears console stereo. Big hunk of wood. One day at 12-13 years old I plopped down on the floor and happened to be centered between the two speakers. A Tijuana Brass album was playing (p...
Powered speakers show audiophiles are confused
Thanks all for this interesting thread. Have enjoyed following this discussion.    Curious to know what kind of cables the OP is using in his studio and “home” systems.
Looking for good recordings of female vocals I have not yet tried...
Irene Kral accompanied by Alan Broadbent.
Sound quality of Roon
Thanks all for the comments and suggestions. Airplay delivers Red Book spec. That’s what turned the corner for me since most of my 1500 or so CDs are “Regular” CDs. My small collection of SACDs I still spin in my Marantz Blu-ray player.  Relative...
Sound quality of Roon
Even as an IT/tech guy, the options/ requirements to implement Roon makes my head swim. Found an inexpensive way to try it, figuring I could upgrade afterward.  Have not looked back. It’s changed how I listen to music. Implementation… - CDs impor...
Interesting ASR review of small GR Research speaker kit
@hilde45 ++1 for your balanced approach and the Jefferson Bible.    Measurements and specs are important. I used the impedance plots to determine the crossover frequency for my sub, for instance; frequency curves helped me deal with some beaming ...
Is There A Device For Home Use That Can Measure How Low The Bass In My Speakers Is?
+1 for CDs and SPL meters. Sonic Tools on your smart phone can get you close. Free for the iphone…
Your sub experience: Easy or hard?
Two Hsu subwoofers - using one to handle 90hz and below with Quad ESL63s and a smaller one in my recording studio/office with JBL 4401 monitors (old school).  Very easy integration. Both sound great. Transition between the mains and subs can’t be ...
Most Realistic Recordings
Thank you for this thread. Great stuff!  In my experience, smaller groups/ensembles are easier to “get me in their room” or “get me in theirs.” I’m always looking for larger, more complex music/recordings. in my experience, listening with eyes clo...
Just a public call out
Thanks for posting this. Too often we hear more about problems and negativity; less about what went well. I joined agon in order to buy some speakers. The entire transaction start to finish was exemplary.  Stayed for the good info in these threads...
Let me explain something to you jive turkeys.
Dig. (For those that thought “dig” was funny, I’m a musician. All the cats I work with use Dig as a regular part of the lexicon. It’s a thang. Really. You under dig?)
Speakers for string Quartets
ESL63’s. Hands down. Incredible midrange. Pinpoint imaging. They need power, tho.
Are there speakers that disappear regardless of the recording?
Do you listen with your eyes closed? Visual cues do affect the listening experience.  My Quads disappear all the time, but having my eyes open can interfere with that. This was advice I got as a young guitar student going to hear Segovia. My teach...
Experiment, Experiment; What have been your most successful finds?
+1 hilde45 - laser measurements for speaker placement. I was amazed by how out of whack my speaker placement was. And how much better just a few inches of movement could sound. Also, getting the speakers farther from the back wall.    - taking c...
48kHz vs 96kHz: audible?
Hmm. I suspect that what you were hearing may not be SQ difference between sample size, but problems in how your box downsamples digital signals.    Downsampling problems show up in edge cases, like high violins, reverb tails, etc. For downsampli...
