A first
All I can say is time has changed.   Back in the 70's, going to friends' houses to listen to their sound systems and album collections was a pretty common social event.   These days everyone has access to music in his/her pocket via a wireless hea...

Linlai E 6sn7 tubes
Hi,  I just stumbled upon this interesting thread.   Does anyone here know if either the Linlai E 6sn7 or Psvane CV181-T MKII will fit the Cary Audio SLP-05 preamp without having to use a socket saver? Thanks very much.
Has anyone compared Rogue RP-7 to Cary SLP05 and / or Audio Research Ref 5se?
Thanks @immatthewj,  It's been a few weeks already since I got it back.   Not sure if you've seen the update I posted on my Cary thread.   What an ordeal!    Anyway, so far so good with the unit.   I hope I don't have to send it back again 😀

The stock EH tubes are too bright in my setup, but it has a lot of details and nice punchy bass that I really like.   I guess it really depends on your system.    I recently got some NOS RCA black plates recommended by Brent Jesse at audiotubes.c...

You know you have an audiophile system when you have done one of the followings to achieve it: took out a second mortgage maxed out your credit card limit dipped into your retirement savings All jokes aside, I admire all those who truely en...
How much $$ do bells and whistles add to preamp?
I'm like you,  I prefer a "pure" preamp with the least bells & whistles, but ultimately the choice you make comes down to the sound, and not how many add-on's. I'm pretty happy with my Parasound JC2.  The only add-on that you don't need is th...
Cary Audio SLP-05 First Impression
Thanks @decooney @rodman99999 for the tube rolling suggestions.   I guess I will stick with the stock tubes for now, but I'm sure eventually I will be looking for some new tubes.  That should be an adventure of its own.  😀 As with "everything...
Cary Audio SLP-05 First Impression
Hi folks, I just want to post an update on my SLP-05 that was sent back to Cary for repair. I finally got it back this past weekend, and I’ve been playing it everyday and so far so good. Everything seems to work fine without a hitch. I hope this w...
Best Rock Drummers
Count me in on Keith Moon.   I don't have a vast exposure to various artists & musicians as many of you here.  In my mind, nobody plays like Keith Moon.  He was simply magical.   Too bad he died at such a sound age.
recommended speaker cables and interconnects
Hey @bobbyloans,  I also had the Parasound Pre/Power set up, Mine was JC2/JC5.   I'm writing in past tense because I recently got a new preamp from Cary. Anyway, I was using Kimber Kable Hero balanced for my digital chain:  Streamer -> Pre -&g...
"Too much gain"? (Cary SLP05 question)
Hi @immatthewj,  the cost is actually $140 bench fee plus parts and labor.  He didn't specify how much is parts and labor.   Sorry about the confusion.   Anyway, I decided not to go for that mod. Although the Cary support person is very nice, som...
"Too much gain"? (Cary SLP05 question)
Hey @immatthewj, I didn’t realize you’re the OP.  I think you had commented on the other Cary thread that I started.  Anyway, I just had an email exchange with Cary support about this gain issue.  Apparently they have a service called Gain Reducti...
"Too much gain"? (Cary SLP05 question)
I'm also a new owner of the Cary SLP-05, and I set the left & right gain of the unit to a relatively low level (around 3 o'clock position). My power amp is the Parasound JC5, which also has a pair of input gain dials.  Parasound recommends to...
Classical? Chinese Music
Hey @skyscraper, I found this on the internet. Looks like a pretty good overview of various chinese instruments. My personal favorite is the erhu, which is a bowed instrument with only 2 strings. It only covers about 2 1/2 octaves, and it kind of...
