Preamp Deal of the Century Guys, consider giving this thread a rest and starting new, topic-specific Supratek threads. It is incredibly hard to sift through the information on the 1850+ posts.
Need advice for russian reissue of tunsol 6550 The SED reissues are very nice tubes. They're a bit more "open" sounding then the originals, but they also lack some of the authority of the original 6550. Overall, for ~$60/pr, they are a great value.
Supratek Tubes and Tube Swappin' for Everybody It's the same tube. "Red Bank" refers to a specific Bendix manufacturing division/plant (located in New Jersey), not any cosmetic differences.
Supratek Tubes and Tube Swappin' for Everybody I'll cook them a bit more. All three Bendix I have are NOS/NIB, so I'll give them a fair shake by burning them a couple weeks longer. For 6106 users, how long does the tube life last? When called to do 5AR4 duty, the life should be significantly s...
Joule vzn 80 or 100 for merlins? Transcendant has a SE OTL. I believe it's the only one in production. It's very difficult (prior to the Transcendant, I thought it was impossible) to create usable impedance for speakers in this circuit. The GM-70 rarely gets used in the US (mostly...
Supratek Tubes and Tube Swappin' for Everybody It's been about a week of burning in the 6106. It definitely sounds different then the GZ34, but not better in my system. I can only arrive at the conclusion that one's opinion of this configuration is very system specific. With my Art Audio Jotas...
Warm interconnects recommendation Most anything Straightwire or Cardas.
art audio volume control I'm not sure about AA's standard passive pots, but the Goldpoint stepped attenuator they offer as a premium option is nice. Whether you like it or not will ultimately depend on your source and your personal preference. Any Art Audio except the PX-...
Joule vzn 80 or 100 for merlins? The Dehavilland monos that output 30 watts employs the commonly used 845 triode output tube. The Joules use 6336C tubes. There's no such thing as a "OTL tube" .... it depends on the how the output tube is applied in the circuit.FWIW, I use about 2...
Supratek Tubes and Tube Swappin' for Everybody Yes, the 6106 is essentially a 5Y3.
Supratek Tubes and Tube Swappin' for Everybody Fiddler,IME, the Sylvania Bad Boys is comparitively "dry" sounding versus the Tung Sol's more liquid, "wet" sound. For clarification's sake, I am not using the adjective "dry" with any negative connotation. It's a matter of perference. I like the ...
Supratek Tubes and Tube Swappin' for Everybody Bwhite,You bring up a good point that new Supratek owners should take notice of. The Suprateks are ridiculously sensitive to microphony (not a good thing). I really don't know a linestage preamp that is more sensitive. You essentially need phono-g...
Supratek Tubes and Tube Swappin' for Everybody Hey Jazzdude, You're observation regarding the 6106 is exactly how I'd expect a 5Y3 will perform 5AR4-purposed circuit. Another thing I suspect is that it will distort more quickly. FWIW, I'm burning in a Bendix 6106 right now. I'm going to give i...
Supratek Tubes and Tube Swappin' for Everybody Bwhite,How many of each "type" of KR have you auditioned? How can you rule out it wasn't a build quality issue due to a small sampling size? I've handled over a hundred of each type (just sold about 30 pairs of the Navy type in the last half year)...
Supratek Tubes and Tube Swappin' for Everybody Hi Bwhite,You've arrived at the erroneous conclusion that base prints mean something. They don't. It was not uncommon for base prints to be labelled months after the actual date of production, sometimes completely removed from the actual site of p... |
