I think the Linkwitz full 521.4 system would rival anything available anywhere but they do take a lot of space to sound their best. I have great interest but dont have the floor space available. I do have a pair of Spatial X5's and for the money ... 
Do You Buy Speakers Without Hearing Them?
I have purchased several sets of speakers without hearing them first. None were disappointing. The last pair I listened to before buying were some KEF model 3's(?) in 1995.

Up to a point both are accurate. Budget for what you can afford and you will be able to find something in that range that will make you happy. Speakers should be the biggest part of the budget. Speaker quality and placement are most important IMHO.  
can subwoofers make things worse?
SVS Micro. I have a pair of them mated to a set of LS50's and it's a perfect match.
