Lay Off the Newbies!
What a wise suggestion.
I bought some Owens Corning 703. Now what?
There are a number of books online about building your own recording studio where the math and principles are well explained.  To experiment, try a double layer (4 inches) 2 x 4 foot panel in corners and and on your narrowest dimension (often the ...
No "Room Correction" Topic option. Why?
If you are building anyway, building for acoustics can make big differences.  More than 8 ft ceilings and other dimensions is a start.  Try books like this before you start. https://smile.amazon.com/Handbook-Sound-Studio-Construction-Recording/dp...
is this the greatest live band of all time?
I love these posts because it helps me size up everyone here!  Saw J. Geils in '72 and a great show!  As a musician, I look at different things than just the energy level.  Virtuosos like ELP and Yes and Tower of Power, stand out for me.  But Eart...
The very best sound: Direct to Disc
We sold Sheffield Labs in the 70's.   The Tower of Power direct to disc was great.  Wasn't Esther Satterfield on one?
Should people with no turntable or reel to reel be considered audiophiles?
Funny responses.  The car analogy is apropo.  Would a real Porche fan settle for their SUV or be more likely to settle for a Miata?
Should people with no turntable or reel to reel be considered audiophiles?
Yes.  Pursuit of improved sound within the capacity of the medium could make us audiophiles.  Does a $500 turntable/cart combination sound better than a $1,000 DAC playing SACD's?
WHat did Audiophiles hear during Tape deck era?
Your responses are true and fun to recall.  Yes, cassettes started just for dictation, then with improvements and Dolby noise reduction, as a reliable replacement for 8-Track in cars, and people could then make their of mix tapes....but everyone h...
What was your most disappointing album purchase?
Funny selections...some surprising.  But just remember some of those artists had no choice because the record company had artistic direction!   "Love Beach" by Emerson, Lake  & Palmer.
Loudness - Why has the industry stopped producing amplifiers with this feature any longer?
I sold Yamaha hi-fi in mid 70's.   They taught the concept based on the Fletcher-Munson curves and it worked well.  You set your maximum comfortable volume first, then turned it down with the loudness control.  (Variable, not just a switch).  I be...
Best debut album
bekeske.....Tiny Tim is really a good album, with a Bowie tune on it....hooda thunk?
Best debut album
Do you mean "best" compared to their work that followed?  I'll throw out Edgar Winter's "Entrance" and Led Zeppelin.   Most other acts started pretty rough compared to when they were seasoned later.....I'm thinking Beatles and Billy Joel....both o...
DAC bakeoff: Denafrips Aries II vs Topping D70 vs Parasound Halo integrated
What a good process you have there to really compare.  Your choices from reading here are a lot like what I'd try if I had a budget.  Not surprised about your Topping comments.  My cheaper D50s is my first DAC and a very satisfying step into high ...
Wow an old album that rocked your world
Wow.....all your favorites gave me flashbacks!   Skipping every Stevie and Beatles album, may I add, A Wizard/A True Star  Todd Rundgren.  Edgar Winter's White Trash.  Tower of Power  Back to Oakland.    Thanks for the Procul Harem mentions, but n...
Jazz for someone who doesn't like jazz.
I haven't red any responses, but Steely Dan frequently referenced Duke Ellington.  His own big band recordings are well respected as well as "Digital Duke".  Quincy Jones big band arrangements, too,  GRP All Stars did some great digital recordings...
