Modding the PS Audio Directstream DAC MK1 and MK2
Thanks Jeff. My takeaway from your response is that you recommend using a pre-amp. I'm good with that.
Modding the PS Audio Directstream DAC MK1 and MK2
Hi Jeff, one of the reasons I'm considering your transformer upgrade for the MKI has to do with connecting the DAC directly to my Pass amp. I seem to recall you saying that your transformer upgrade increases the output voltage, which helps when yo...
Thiel Owners
Hi Everybody,About a year ago, I posted about a problem I was having with my Thiel CS 3.0s that had not been used for many years. The soundstage was off and it seemed to follow the speaker. It wasn’t obvious whether it was the crossover, midrang...

Jon - Thanks for the pics.  Your room reminds me of my room.  I'll try to take some pictures of my room and post them.  I'm envious of your 3.6s.  They look great.  I had a pair for many years that I bought new and recently sold them due to lack o...

tomthiel - Thank you very much! I'm very excited to hear that you added the CS3 into the 3.5 upgrade project.  And, thank you for sharing the Thiel Audio history with us.

Thanks for the feedback everybody. I really do appreciate it. I think that I’ll attempt to further isolate the problem by swapping the tweeters first and then the midrange drivers if the problem doesn’t move with the tweeters. I’ll share my result...

Thanks jafant.  This 30 year old Thiel CS3.0 vs LS50 is an experiment for me to try to understand how good the older Thiels are compared to newer highly regarded designs like the LS50. I was also trying to determine what I could get away with in ...

Hi Everybody,I'm a longtime Thiel owner and I've got some CS3 questions that I would really appreciate some help with.  Last week, I couldn’t stand it any longer so I got my Thiel CS3s out of storage and set them up for the first time in my small ...
Speakers for a small room
My room is 11' x '16 x '10. I spent 2 years learning room acoustics and treating my room. I spent another 2 years going through speakers that were too big for my room (e.g., Golden Ear T2). A year and a half ago I got a pair of Kef Ls50s. Last wee...
My first Tube Amplifier
My first tube amps were a set of Dodd 120 monoblocks. I read a story in the Dallas Morning News about a local tube equipment designer that just started his company named Dodd Audio. I contacted Gary and before I knew it, I was listening to his n...

Thanks grannyring.

I've got another question for the tube amp designers.  Does it matter whether the filament supply is AC or DC?  I've heard arguments both ways.  I think that it would be great if one could get away with an AC filament supply because it requires le...

Thanks grannyring.  I'll check those out and talk to Jack.

Roger, here's an example of an Edcor power transformer that I was referring to:https://datasheets.globalspec.com/ds/4994/EDCORElectronics/D8B00DCE-B760-4C1E-A7D7-73CA643A8B3C2 secondary windings. One for B+ and the other for filament voltage.

I've not tried an Edcor power, I have the outputs. Most of them are made for tube rectifiers I believe. I'm not fond of tube rectifiers in amps above 30 watt, ,certainly not 100 watts. Were you planning a tube rectifier? Which one? What output tr...
