Which SPEAKER for the 21ST century? I think the Manger design looks great, in theory. Haven't heard it, but would love to. From what I see on the website, the best bet would be a Manger driver about 2 inches larger in diameter, so it would get down into a reasonable bass range(40Hz)...
Personal speaker evolution I've only had two pairs of commercial speakers:One was my first pair which was some unknown store brand 3-way system. The other was a set of Linn Kans. All my others were my own DIY handbuilts.

35Hz - 25kHz -- A Partial 'Purist'? Tweekerman, If you've got to do it, then use a sub that has a driver with a very low Fs(resonant frequency). Usually the larger size drivers. Large phase shifts appear around the Fs, and can extend into the listening range. Fs should be about 15Hz...
Need replacement for garden hose Audio Advisor Gumby, I have outlined the entire design on my other thread, now in the 2nd page of archives, called "How come when most audiophiles..." in the speaker thread section. The part you want is my 3-23-02 post that starts with "As the person that start...
Have you tried "doping" your speaker cones? Herman, I've doped the Fostex FE-103's in my full range single driver speaker system. After numerous adjustments to the T-lines and other aspects, I've refined them quite well. The upper midrange peak and sibilance problems were about the only thi...
Amp play a low volumes? Why music sounds thinner and less lifelike at low volumes is a phenomenon called the "Fletcher-Munson Effect". This is when the ear is more sensitive to midrange sounds at low volumes. The "Loudness" button on receivers is designed to compensate f...
Have you tried "doping" your speaker cones? Sean, I've not only got my drivers "hooked" on doping, but I've got myself hooked at the same time. It really worked exactly as I thought. Great fine-tuning tweek. Only adds a few grains of weight, but alot of stiffening. About the whizzer cone mo...
Rumble Filter for my Linn LP-12 setup ?? Make sure it has a steep rolloff or it will affect the bass response. The Linn LP12 has extremely low rumble. What is causing you to get rumble? It might be better to cure the problem instead of filtering it out, which may cause another problem.
Which SPEAKER for the 21ST century? After a quick trip around the web, I found only tweeters using the plasma technology. Mfrs. include Accapella, Magnat, Corona, and a DIY page for a plasma tweeter by Ulrich Hauptmann in Holland. They all use a flame/ionization technique which resu...
Which SPEAKER for the 21ST century? Tweekerman, I am sorry if I ignored your post on the other thread, no disrespect meant. I have read about the Ravens and others you mentioned, but have not personally heard them. The Ravens may be the future, or the German Physic wave bending tran...
stacking speakers? I also agree with Sean's point of reradiating, not a good idea to have a "live" pair and a "dead" pair stacked. If you can't move them, the next best thing would be to get a sound-deadening cover or wrap, for the pair not in use. This may not be p...
Can I make a crossover or buy one? Your best bet is to get an active adjustable crossover and separate amp. To make a passive crossover for your existing sub, you will need the comprehensive spec sheet on the driver and then run calculations on the box to determine the system Q and...
Have you tried "doping" your speaker cones? I should mention that the main reason I tried it was to tame a small peak in the upper midrange and to take a little "edge" off the highs that was causing sibilance. You should try one thin coat at a time, let dry, and listen test. You can go too f... |
