Review: Placette Audio DB Preamplifier
Very detailed review, JD. Especially your thoughts on the selection process. Thanks.
Which has a greater effect on music, int.amp or CD?
I guess I just wasted all that money buying my high-dollar analog rig and OTL amp setup. If I had only known that getting a CD Walkman, a Technics receiver, and a pair of Sound Labs U-1 would have sounded better, I could have saved myself alot of ...
Set up of cartridge on linear tracking turntable.
Oh, no! I am so,so sorry for your loss. I would be sick as a dog right now if that happened to me. My sympathies, and better luck with your next one. I only use pivot arms, so I'll leave the setup question to the linear-tracking experts.
High Sensitvity = good transient response ?
I am assuming that was Sam Tellig that you quoted. First, he is making a totally "out-of-hand" statement, based on the measurements of a single ended tube amp design. This is obvious, as he refers to "adding negative feedback" as some kind of fix ...
High Sensitvity = good transient response ?
Sean, they don't give the details on the website, other than it is a line with "valves" to control air flow. That sounds like what you are talking about with the stuffing. I've never experimented with something like that before. It seems like an i...
High Sensitvity = good transient response ?
CDC, according to the Brentworth website, their models use a 6.5" cone single-driver and a combination of aperiodic and transmission-line loading, called BSL. They are not planar types.
Audiogon/Asylum and magazine reviewers posts
I monitor Stereophile, but there is rarely anything in there worth reading.
High Sensitvity = good transient response ?
CDC, the new Lowthers do not have the midrange peak anymore. They have been updated and the mids are now smooth. If you heard noise like a "fan blade" out of a SET amp, there was definitely something wrong with it. They do not normally have anythi...
High Sensitvity = good transient response ?
Well,CDC, it sounds to me like a classic case of a particular design doing some things very well, and some things not so well. Many of the things you didn't like about the Brentworths are not weaknesses in the other brands of single-driver systems...
Avantgarde's are Great but Bass Integration?
I will make a suggestion that you could try. Have you tried placing them in the corners? This placement will simulate the radiation pattern of a bass horn, for your woofer box. It is possible that it may integrate better in this location. You will...
High Sensitvity = good transient response ?
I just checked out the Brentworth line on the web, and it seems interesting. Their specs on the top line model show a response of 15Hz-20kHZ within 3db. I find this a little hard to swallow, but they claim it. Seems they have a proprietary loading...
DIY Speakers, worth the hassles?
Clueless, I'm glad you had a good time at the Bash. Wish I could have been there, too. Regarding the comments by Wiggens of Adire, on the driver quality issue, I'd take that with a large grain of salt. Remember this, the drivers are the parts that...
Cain&Cain Abby
Yes, they are the same, but remember, these are INTERNAL dimensions. The overall size will be a bit larger due to the thickness of the material you use. Also, I used a 12" wide front baffle panel, which I believe helps to reduce any problems with ...
Avantgarde's are Great but Bass Integration?
This is always a problem with horn loaded speaker designs. Bass horns are too big to get the bottom end people want, so they go with direct radiators. They never quite match. That's the answer. If you can live with it, fine. If you can't, then you...
Cain&Cain Abby
I use a 1 watt Berning MicroZOTL as a main amp, so I am familiar with your needs. The Cain and Cain Abby is a Voigt Pipe Speaker that uses Fostex drivers w/92db efficiency. I have used those drivers on single driver systems that I have built, and ...
