help with din to rca cable for creek amp?
I have a British Armstrong reciever that uses DIN connectors, and the ones for B&O and others work fine. I found some on Ebay for $5 for a full Tape Loop(ins and outs). While I was waiting, I went to radio shack and bought a 5 pin DIN plug, an...
Speaker priority: high or low???
Cloudgif, if I may jump in here and address your point of "adding" things to the music, my point(and I think Nate's as well) is that the speakers cannot add any more to the musical signal that will create more music. They can add colorations and d...
Tubes Do It -- Transistors Don't.
The more things change, the more they stay the same. What I am seeing here is simply a re-hashing of the old "measurements" argument that was totally de-bunked, and trashed over 20 years ago. The measurements do not reflect the sound of the equipm...
Review: Purist Audio Design Proteus Interconnect
Hey Nate, how about a ranking of the list of cables in your "similar products" list, including the Proteus. Inquiring minds want to know!
VPI aries scout, Nottingham innerspace...
The Nottingham sounds better, but the VPI has a good upgrade abilty to take it higher than the Nottingham, eventually, if you ever want to do that. The P25 is at a lower level. The entry-level Basis would be as good as the entry-level VPI and you ...
Grado Sonata, I need help.
Very nice TT's Alvu!

Mwalsdor, these are a variation on the same theme, but this was not what I built(regarding the mouth mods). I used the same box dimensions, but used the standard 20mm x 11 mm mouth opening, with no reflector. I don't think the mouth mod in the "jo...
Strange Tonearm Tweak. Long
Basement, what Zaikesman said about the Vertical Tracking Force is true. However, increase in vertical resistance(mass/inertia) is also bad. The light weight of the arm in the vertical plane ensures good tracking on warped albums. If vertical mass...
Strange Tonearm Tweak. Long
Zaikesman, I think you are on the right track for calculating the proper mass, but I would throw something else into the mix. The added weight in the case of my modification is at the pivot point. The stylus deflection is occuring about 9 1/2" awa...
Grado Sonata, I need help.
It sounds to me like you need to play around with the VTA some more. The Sonata is supposed to have some authoritative bass sound. The weight is good for that arm, and the compliance is maybe a little high, but should match ok. I'd say it's the VTA.
Speaker priority: high or low???
I have always been in the "source is most important" camp. I have had excellent results with my systems using that format, and expect to continue in that vein. I definitely consider speakers to be important, but the source is where its at. When yo...
Time coherence - how important and what speakers?
Karls, thanks for the clarification. I was under the impression that the capacitor or coil shift would be additive to the reactive element, and not be cancelled by it, in a first order configuration. Is this fully proportional, or are there some v...
Strange Tonearm Tweak. Long
Zaikes, the Dynavector 507 was addressing this idea, and that is a good observation. My problem with the way they did it was that it introduced a whole other set of bearings, counterweights, and resonances that probably did more harm than good. Wh...
Time coherence - how important and what speakers?
Stehno, the 1st order crossover alignment, which consists of a single capacitor between drivers is a 90 degree phase alignment. It allows the bass driver to run full range, to its natural limits, and blocks the tweeter from operating below the fre...
Tubes Do It -- Transistors Don't.
If ANYONE on this board REALLY thinks that I, or other tube aficionados here, are buying tube systems to get a certain type of "even order distortion" or euphonic sound out of this gear, then they are totally deluding themselves. This notion that ...
