Turntable Set Up Questions again?
On your 1st question, I would say generally about +/- 20% from the center of the recommended range is about all you should go. The higher the compliance, the more careful you have to be about adding force. If you have to go very far out of the rec...
Armstrong 626 Receiver
Thank you, although I did post this thread almost 4 months ago, I am glad to see that some will go through the old archives and respond. I have found the same site, and subsequently found out some things that I didn't even know about the unit. Tha...
Systemdex IIx. .. need cartridge recommendation
Hi John, personally, I would leave it as is, as far as the major aspects, like arm or motor. Little tweaks may work out, but they are rather individual to the system being used. I think that a dedicated stand made of lightweight material, and very...
Systemdex IIx. .. need cartridge recommendation
Taking all the system components into account, and the relative prices, to maintain a suitable price/performance ratio, I would recommend one of the Goldring MM models, like a 1022GX or a 1042. This keeps the cost of the cartridge under the price ...
moving up a notch..help..
Agree with the above, go used. A Linn LP12 or Oracle Mk3 with very nice arms could be had at that price. Both will handily outperform the new tables you mentioned.
Review: David Berning Co MicroZOTL Tube amp
Well, I have sold my little MicroZOTL, and gone on to the bigger Berning model. I did get an email from the member who bought it, and he loves it also. The main comment in his email was,"Wow! It sounds great!" I couldn't have said it better myself.
Equipment Break-in: Fact or Fiction
Ben, I'm sorry, but I just don't know the answer to that question. I'm sure there is some reason, but I don't know it. If I were to venture some kind of unfounded theory, I might say that there is some kind of "memory" in the structure of a wire, ...
MC cartridge rebuild
I would send it to Linn, unless you know who they send it to, and can guarantee that they will give you the same specs as they do for Linn. I don't know who they send them to. Troika is a very good cartridge.
Source for Variac
Mouser Electronics is one place.
Equipment Break-in: Fact or Fiction
Seandtaylor, I would respond to your question in this manner. Since I have no solid engineering proof of this phenomenon, I can't answer in terms of data. But I can point to the several posts on this thread where listeners who did not believe in b...
Equipment Break-in: Fact or Fiction
If we could measure the "break-in" factor by some electronic means, then everyone would believe it, right? The main argument here, that I see, is that if there is no measured quantification of this phonomenon, then it is some sort of "psychologica...
Out on the tiles...with speaker spikes.
Judit, as we know, there are proper applications for different coin denominations. Obviously you are aware of this, and I was simply mentioning my use of the 25 cent application. However, I would never be "nouveau riche" enough to use 25 cent mode...
What active preamp...
Marakanetz, I have found that using Argent Room Lens clones between my speakers has eliminated the problem that is normally caused by having the equipment between the speakers. This is very easy and cheap to try. Instructions for them are on the J...
Tubes & Digital - Is There A Link?
Personally, I think that although the inclusion of certain tube circuitry in the system may possibly soften the digital sound, there is no way that a problem in the source can be improved by the downstream components. If the problem is not correct...
Best Way to Use Turntable with System Cabinet
Peter, the very best stand that you could buy for your Linn LP12, is the Sound Organisation TT stand, that used to cost about $125. Don't know what it costs now. It is a very plain stand made from square section steel tubing, that has almost a cub...
