Stand Recommendation
Two concrete blocks placed one on top of another, on end, make an extremely cheap and effective stand. If placed on carpet, cones underneath are helpful. Sonically, they are as good as anything! They can be spray painted whatever color you wish, b...
Long USB Cable OK?
If your DAC is 1st class and your system is very revealing, you will be satisfied with nothing less than the best short USB cable possible. In my experience, longer IC's are preferable. I have tried optical (allows a very long run,) and its OK, bu...
Amp advice for Sound Lab M-2's
I have experience with the Parasound JC-1's, Wolcott P220 tube amps, and now the Ayre MX-R's. All of these do a great job of driving the Sound Labs, but without doubt the Ayre amps are the best yet. The JC-1's are my least favorite among the 3, bu...
Which way to go to built a music server??
My route is the Mac Mini to a Wavelength Crimson Dac via a short USB cable and it is superb. Can't speak to the other options mentioned, but do believe a good USB dac is hard to beat. I can control iTunes from either my iTouch or on my laptop via ...
DIY cable elevators
All of the above suggestions ignore one important element, resonance. I am a firm believer in the benefits of elevators, but there are three elements potentially at play: signal bleed and smear through the dielectric insulation of the cable into s...
So whats your favorite music themed movie?

Survey-What is your most used source?
Depends on my mood and mode. Lp's via a fantastic front end when I want the very best, and am willing to make the effort and have the time to really focus and listen attentively. However, I love having music in my life most all the time, and there...
Which speakers have wide dispersion?
I lived with a pair of Mirage M-1's from 1988 (bought new) until 2002 and loved them for all the reasons well articulated by Johnnb53. I auditioned Martin Logan's in my space and found the beaming to be unacceptable. Sound Labs gave me everything ...
Which speakers have wide dispersion?
Having been a fan and owner of various types of planar speakers for over 45 years, I can wholeheartedly agree. Conventional dynamic (box) speakers are the opposite, with the sound coming from a point source, albeit when done well can present a wid...
Cable elevators - conventional wisdom wrong?
Having visited a fellow audiophile with a highly evolved and revealing system, I was intrigued by his insistence on the benefit of elevating his cables. It was done with stiff construction paper cut and formed into 5" vertical cylinders with tape,...
Tube amp for "difficult" speakers,,,
Sound Lab (and all true electrostatic speakers) are a difficult load for the previously mentioned reasons. However, there are tube amps that are very capable of driving them extremely well, Wolcott, Atmosphere and CAT being good examples.
I just don't get PC Audio
As others have commented, the fact that you "don't get it" is just that. I have all three major sources (fine vinyl, a very good RB/SACD player, and a great USB DAC fed by a 500GB HD with 15,000 cuts in lossless format, and love each one for diffe...
Recording quality effect on listening pleasure ...
"The greatest music, whatever you feel that may be, will touch that part of your soul that seeks it regardless of playback issues." Cassey 33Very true! And, a great system increases that joy immensely. Nonetheless, I recently was floored by a recor...
Preamps with two pairs of balanced outs?
Aesthetix Calypso, and probably the Callisto.
How to explain our obsessions to the uninitiated?
An additional thought: Music I love can be enjoyed on a POS (ie: crappy car radio) but the enjoyment increases exponentially as the system gets better. Better "boxes" as well as attention to EVERYTHING else just makes it all the more so, and when ...
