Subwoofers: Ported or sealed?
For music, I much prefer low Q sealed. The roll-off much better matches the room gain so flatter to start with, and you don't need additional subsonic high pass filtering. Less group delay but I don't think that is really very important.  If you ...
Speaker Cable Recommendation
After reading all the published papers by real engineers on the subject, and doing the impedance calculations myself, I am still convinced that plain old resistance is the dominant factor by about 100:1  So, 10 gauge twisted pair seems to still...
How easily can you distinguish between different DACs?
Yea, some high priced DACs sound like garbage so a day and night difference.    Others I have heard sound just fine.  Just spend days comparing bottom tier chip DACs and the differences are as slight as different filters.   I have yet to hear one ...
Significant steps? (DAC)
I think the conclusions that all "tier one" chip DACs sound almost the same are pretty close.  I do hear a tiny difference it the very top end "air" but it seems to be at the expense of vocal smoothness. Filter 3 smoother, 4 sharper .  Overall, I ...

Ran across this: https://addictedtoaudio.com.au/blogs/how-to/how-to-pick-the-best-filter-setting-for-your-dac
Significant steps? (DAC)
Listening on my desk system is concluded.  Headphones and speakers. There might be a slight difference in upper treble detail, but insignificant to me. In about the same range as switching filters from minimum phase to Anodizing. I hear no differe...
Two questions to make you mad.
I think we need a new terms in our hobby for three different goals.  "Audiophile" is not a good word.  Once upon a time, maybe we could say it was someone who appreciates music reproduction enough to sit and listen, and the hobby that represents. ...
Tube sound is not about warmth. It's about correct presentation.
Besides Carver's work, also read David Manly and how increasing the grid isolation resister can make a tube sound more solid state.   I think Benchmark might disagree with SS "missing" something. :) Now as far as that "metallic" sound, I did fin...
Recommend me a DAC under 3k
Forgot to mention Benchmark. By their WEB, they seem to have tackled most if not all the known issues. Digital cliping, power supplies, great output etc.
Tube sound is not about warmth. It's about correct presentation.
But what is it in the sound that gives this?   It is not just more harmonics as that is synthesized in modern DACs and it is no where near the same. It is not linear distortion as tubes can be as flat as anything. ( And it is easy to turn down the...
He spent a lifetime collecting the blues.
A fantastic effort.  Great history that could have been lost.  It is unfortunate so much of it is such old recordings they are not much for listening.   I have their 4 CD complication they extracted from the library.  History but I don't seem to p...
Significant steps? (DAC)
I agree, the most important part of the DAC is the reconstruction and output analog, though from my listening I would have to give a lot of props to the digital implementation ( not the chip) as the Atom+ still holds it's own with a 3-generation o...

I suggest some believers in magic here do a little reading on human objectivity, or lack there-of.   More productive than snide insulting remarks.  Human senses are not and never have been objective. This is why first person witness is the lowest ...
All Pre 1970 Vintage speakers suck! Prove me wrong
The list of speakers that were so bad I could eliminate them in a showroom is so long it would not fit on this page. Price not withstanding.  Instead let me mention a few that were at least listenable.  If I lived in NY, maybe I could hear a wider...

If someone is not interested in factual information on this subject, you do not need to read my posts. I  try to present facts so people can make up their own mind.  If you have any actual evidence other than "You believe", please present it.  I ...
