Looking for Avantgarde Color Horns Look for Oris horns - can be painted (by you) in your choice of colors - I think Welborne Labs is a dealer.
Wife/girlfriend or audio: if you had to chose? Any woman that would make you choose - pressure you to give up something you love - is not worthy. Period.
HiFi lacking social recognition? money does not equal discernment...hence the existence of Zimmers, McMansions, etc. Personally, I adhere to the George Costanza ideal of the "opposite"; if the new money crowd is not into high-end audio, that's a plus in my book.
Big Stupid Warm Speakers 3 words: SNELL TYPE B. Find a used pair of these for a few grand, they're flat to 20 Hz and extremely (many at the time said "overly" warm). I had a pair for a few years, and they're big-hearted and fun! Not to be confused with the B Minors.
best or craziest speakers' design.. You can find used Avantgarde Unos in your price range.
Amplifiers:A Keeper for Life. Do you know of one ? Lamm ML2s are the best I've been fortunate enough to hear, and a superb match for my speakers...doubt they're ever leaving.
Is 5 Watts enough for Horns ? 300B amps are fine on Duos. I've since switched to 18 watt "behemoths" (Lamm ML2), but for sonic reasons, not lack of volume capability.
sonic differences between cary slp98 & slp98 'dc' I have the direct coupled version with oil caps - better bass control & slam, none of the "wooliness" that is often (rightly or wrongly) associated with Cary house sound. Kevin Deal at Upscale Audio is something of a guru when it comes to Cary...
How many audio systems do you have in your home? Three:Big rig in dedicated room - tubes 'n horns (Avantgarde, Lamm, etc.).Home theater in living room.Small SET rig in home office...amazing what 3.5 WPC can do in a small room w/sympathetic components.
Help Please recommend a 5ch amp around $2000 I second the Butler TDB 5150...plenty of drive but with just a hint of tube sweetness. Cool blue glow at night, too...
Upgrade Rec $7K-$12K Range w/ Duos and Audiopax Chfs911 is right - I'd do the Omega upgrade before getting a new CD player! I have about 6 months on my upgrade now and am ecstatic.
need new rack with isolation in mind Grand Prix Audio now makes a double-wide rack for AV systems; though I've not "heard" that one, I can give the highest recommendation to the Monaco Modular line for audio use.
Amps for Avantgarde Lamm ML2 monos make my 108dB Duo Omegas sing! The ML2 has since been replaced by the ML 2.1, with (I believe) very minor changes. 18 watts per side.
What speakers play the loudest cleanly ? Big horns, hands down. If you had a pair of Avantgarde Trios with a few stacked pairs of their Basshorns...
