Replacing my tweeters a good idea?
No one is suggesting going through one's electronics and replacing parts willy nilly. This is a specific fix, based on experience and SUCCESS. To lead people to believe that inserting a resistor in series with a tweeter will cauuse the walls to co...
B&O, overpriced artistic piece of audio?
Stepping down? You had better hope there is a safety net to catch you at the bottom.
Speaker cable termination
Dekay, I used to worry about this also. But, if your amp and speakers have good quality connectors(which can be tightened down a good bit), you are in effect making a gas tight connection. Now I do not say this is the same force being applied duri...
Cheap Tweak?
I checked out the ingredients in Contax. Heptane(50%), cylclohexane(10%), propane(20%), ethyl alcohol(10%), isopropyl alcohol(10%). Based on this, you can make a cheap, effective substitute using butane and 99% isopropyl alcohol, in a 3:1 or 4:1 r...
Speaker cable termination
I agree 100%.
Tube Amps for Coincident Super Eclipse
I use a Jadis Orchestra Reference with Coincident speakers, and the sound is wonderful. The amp is $3500. The combination is synergy itself. And best of all, I can use silver cables, and there is NOT a trace of brightness. The silver allows me to ...
Jolida JD502RC
This amp is basically a 302B, using 6550 output tubes, rather than EL34. If your speakers are not sensitive enough to be driven by the 302B, you would need either this or the 801. I prefer the 302B by a wide margin, if you can get away with it. It...
Speaker cable termination
Buy the Audioquest(I forget what the model name is) lugs. They are silver, and were used for all speaker cables, from Indigo on up. They are cheap. Solder them yourself(or have your local tech do it) with silver solder.
Poly Crystal Cable Towers (do they work)
Excellent points Gthirteen. At one company I used to work at a guy decided that only pharmaceutical(as opposed to laboratory) grade ethylcellulose could be used in a project he was working on. It cost more than 3 times as much. Do you know what ph...
Replacing my tweeters a good idea?
Opinions on speaker crossover theory are as varied as the colors of the world. Disagreements regarding how to design/modify/tweak a speaker are a dime a dozen(1000X more so than any other area of audio). The only thing that can be absolutely said ...
Getting into tubes?
I checked out the AES SE-811. I found it to be a great amp. Very open and clean. If you can handle the fact it is only 12(I believe) watts, you would be fine. More people than you would expect can do very well on that amount of power. I have seen ...
Replacing my tweeters a good idea?
Sean, you are partially correct about what happens when a resistor is inserted into the speaker circuit. Output is lowered, tonal characteristics are changed. THAT IS THE POINT!!! Crossover frequency is left UNAFFECTED by resistors. Resistors mere...
prevent hardening of speaker surrounds
I agree 100%. The part we don't see(suspension) is where is much more critical. I also know that speakers with different surrounds(foam, linen, butyl, etc.) sound different. Neither point was the issue in this thread, however. Appreciate your pers...
Replacing my tweeters a good idea?
Wire a resistor on the tweeter leg to tame the irritability. May have a resistor now, but I have found most cheap speakers have REALLY simple crossovers(bereft of components). A good, wire wound from a company like Ohmite(better than what's in 99%...
Getting into tubes?
Dragon, I heard the Mesa Baron a few times. I thought it was a great sounding amp w/the 5881s it had. I know it accepts many other tubes. You may want to check it out. From what I heard, Mesa is now out of the high end market(will only do pro audi...
