The "Snake Oil" Trope
I have a system in the 50k range. I insist cables do make a big difference. I was using a $100 pair of cables that were somewhat "low end." I had a friend tell me my cables were the weak link in my system. After several high end cable auditions I ...
warmest speaker cables you've heard?
If speaker cables color sound like a tone control, I would think you would have 4 or 5 different types of cable depending on the recordings you are listening to. Perhaps a brighter cable to get the most out of a very warm recording. Perhaps a warm...
McIntosh fuse changeout to make better sound
I don't know, but I was wondering if high end manufacturers of audio components use high end fuses. I have McIntosh 601's. They are 10k + for the pair. You would think companies like this would have researched this potential improvement. Even if t...
For the Audiophile with a taste for good design(looks)....a question.
Waterfall glass speakers in a very contemporary room. Not sure how they sound, so you may not need to hook them up.
The problem with Magicos
Just released Magico Q7-PD (pre-drilled).
McIntosh fuse changeout to make better sound
I found no difference in high end fuses. Any fuse will compromise sound. What worked for me, was taking all of the fuses out and hard wiring the 2 ends of the fuse link with good copper or silver wire.
Mac 611's
Not sure if this helps, but maybe buy used 611's? Also, perhaps to get the extra power and mono's to boot, you could look into McIntosh 601's. They have a little less head room than the 611's, but still plenty of power.
Are all of these NOS tube inventories real? How have we not consumed them already?
That's a good question. I'm wondering if companies bought tubes like commodities. Then SS HI-FI came in (the late 50's)? Uh oh.
The survival of the fittest.
Perhaps also, big money, history and diversification like JBL/Harmon. Not arguing sound as much as long term success. From little cheap items to the middle of the road, in cars, and onward to the Synthesis line.
Has "politically correct" killed the used audio market?
If it's old and damaged, you pay less. If it's old, damaged, and vintage you pay more.
Are Shakti Stones effective?
So many people try this product and quickly dismiss it. I found it takes a good 50 hours to break your stones in.
Whats your favourite track to play to the non hi-fi visitor?
Schubert said,  "Laurence Welk"It got me thinking, After listening to a couple of tracks and having a couple of beers. Put on a Welk "toe tapper" and turn on the bubble machine that is hidden behind the couch. Priceless!
New speakers. New room.
Very cool room. Out of place? No. And don't come back with a post that say's, we may have to get a new carpet to match the speaker grilles. Enjoy the music.
Biggest "pleasant surprise" components you have owned?
When I was younger and very into hard 70's rock. I bought a David Hafler 500 and JBL L250 ti speakers. I'm older now and have hearing aids. I have Revel Salon 2's, Jazz, Folk, etc. I tell my grandkids about the "old days" and having to walk 10 mil...
Whats your favourite track to play to the non hi-fi visitor?
This is a little different but sometimes I will play Lucky Man from ELP. I have found most of their old stuff was poorly recorded. However, this one track must have been remastered (in a good way) somewhere along the line. It's a track most of my ...
