Physical explanation of amp's break in?
SimAudio's components seem to take a long time to burn in. This was detailed in a review of the Magnum Dynalab 208 Receiver in Stereophile (Jan. 2001). SimAudio designed both the pre and power amp section for the MD208. The reviewer felt the sound...
The Worst Speaker you have ever heard.
I got to hear a demo between some Fried R4 (I think?) and some Bose 501. The Bose had that lobby sound.....like you were at a live performance, but out in the lobby listening with the doors closed. I'm not exaggerating.....I was surprised it was s...
New Aerial 9 or Merlin VSM
Not much response, so I thought I'd throw in my limited knowledge. I own a a pair of the latest Merlin VSM-M's with the latest tweaks. Can't say enough good stuff. Obviously the Merlins will show off all your equipment either good or bad. Don't cl...
Battery powered DAC
Nobody I know has played w/the Sutherland. I'd like to see you try your hand at a phono stage that complements the dAck! The market is waiting....
Battery powered DAC
I'd say battery supplies are getting more common in hi-end gear for obvious AC noise reasons. My Merlin VSM's use the battery BAM. Most everyone whose heard it would agree the full on battery mode on the BAM is the most desirable setting available...
Battery powered DAC
Here's the scoop IMHO....this ack dAck! is a great little DAC. I've had the latest version from the second production batch for about 6 days now. It was pretty obvious after the first day of use that is was a special piece. It's extremely detailed...
Which speaker is the master of IMAGING ????
I agree with Tubegroover.Merlin VSM-Milleniums are truly exceptional in the imaging/soundstaging department. I've had some owners claim you had to spend $20K to get something better.
Good ROCK speakers
I'd skip the JBL and get some Vandersteen 2CI's or 3A's if you can swing it. I loved my 2CI's when I had them and I love rock!
What speakers would match well to my tube system?
Merlin VSM-Millenium's used could be had for slightly less than $4K. These can play all sorts of musical genres with incredible resolution, detail and soundstaging. World class speakers that have incredible bang for your buck. I'm running mine wit...
How do you clean a McIntosh amp?
I've got the same amp with probably greater dirt/pitting going on. I'm tried Simply Green and gotten it to look better w/o taking the lettering off. I did dilute it as per directions.Anybody know how to deal with pitting? If I rechrome it, how much...
A vintage DAC
Audiogon bluebook has the DAC 5 coming out in '96 with a retail of $1995. Used avg. price is listed as $520. Used prices have been tracked at a high of $640 to a low of $400.
Bel Canto vs. Musical Fidelity
I'm currently using a Creek CD43 player. Good resolution, but a bit forward sounding. Not sure how good a transport it'll be??? Hopefully it won't suck, but I'm sure with more money I could do way better. I wonder what a good low end transport mig...
Tube Amp Burn-in
My associated gear for the PA100/100 is a VAC Standard Pre LE w/MM phono. Got a Well Tempered Classic turntable and a Creek CD43 CDP. I wasn't sure what I thought early on, but it does seem to be improving. Better focus. I've probably got 40 to 50...
Anybody heard the new Thiel 2.4?
Has anyone else gotten to listen to the 2.4???? I'd love to hear some additional reports.Anyone care to offer an opinion of the 2.4's vs. the 3.6's vs. the 6's? I'm considering all three models.
What is your opinion of Alon Speakers?
I don't think they are going out of business, they are just a small operation. I just bought a new woofer from Carl (owner/designer) and it only took a week to get from my check going out to speaker showing up on my doorstep. I too tried emailing,...
