Do step up transformers degrade sound?
Bob is TOTALLY on to it. 110% agree, the result of balanced power may quite suprise you - it IS an upgrade!
I'm in the mood to make mods.
OK, LOTS you can do! My 100 monos use EL34's. I replaced them with EI (Yugoslavia) 6CA7 BIG BULB. Not expensive and more neutral. Best EL34 type for my taste - towards the KT88/6550 sound, but still a bit sweeter than that. Much more detail and sl...
To Bi or not to Bi? That is the question
Hi Marakanetz,My 100 monos are very early and offer ultralinear only, a sort of compromise between pentode (being EL34 type tubes)and triode.Your ears will very soon tell you which is right, but if you are crossing over to a solid state amp (mosfe...
To Bi or not to Bi? That is the question
I foresee two problems for you:1)The volume you get from each amp may be different, so you end up with too much or too little bass.2) An amp designer I know calls this "fools bi-amp" and believes that driving an amp full frequency range and using ...
Am I assuming too Much?
I am old enough to have been into hi-fi before the CD came around. The early stuff was dreadfull, but now for serous money digital can sound quite satisfying.I think it costs as the worst digital problems involve time domain behaviour, where heari...
Circuit for DC motor controller
Wow Sean,Thanks for even trying! Any other suggestions would also be appreciated.
Tubes? Transistors? Which are better?
All roads lead to Rome... Good gear is good gear, transistor gear is just much harder to design. Very few transistor designs truly please me, but some do.Tubes can run in much simpler (therefore easier to design, analyse and voice) circuits. If I h...
Love of MUSIC or love of GEAR
Music, first, second and third. My hi-fi isn't pretty, but turn out the lights and I get transported to the venue without too much willing suspension of disbelief.Of course it doesn't sound "real", only live music does! But it does put a big smile...
Best EL34 ?
My favourite it a humble modern tube by EI, the fat bottle 6CA7 - back in production thankfully.I find them a big step towards neutrality, most 34's are too "sweet" for my taste, ultimately cloying. I find KT88's etc too much the other way, though...
Law of Diminishing Returns; where does it kick in?
Very early in commercial gear, as it must due to the distribution chain and all that advertising to pay for. No, I'm not saying that it's all a rip-off, I have been involved in manufacturing electrical appliances at the R&D level, so I underst...
