Lyra Olympos vs Parnassus naked original version
The magnetic circuit lends a family resemblance between the two cartridges. Unfortunately, the Parnassus I compared with an Olympos had quite a few miles on it, so I can't say for certain how much of the extra refinement came from the Olympos, and...
Narrower spindle for Thorens turntable
Thanks Steve,Yes, finding a machinist you trust is key. I didn't mean to trivialize this. It's interesting that your Thorens' are "only" in the .282-.283 range (VPI & Sota territory). I imagine that at some point, Thorens realized they were fi...
Narrower spindle for Thorens turntable
Hi Catama,While Thorens may have the correct sized spindle (I believe they are.286”), it does you little good to know that record manufacturers cannot hold to RIAA specs - or punch records on center for that matter. It is this latter point that re...
The pivoted arm experiment is over
Hi Mepearson,Any time you're interested, contact me offline. I suspect that you have found an arm in the ET-2 that floats your boat in ways that others cannot. It would be a difficult (impossible) experiment to carry out - to produce a pivoted arm...
The pivoted arm experiment is over
Amen Frogman and Moisin ...I've spent countless hours ... starting off by looking up someone's discography, and finding myself on Youtube listening to some dusty old performances. It's an incredible resource for the music lover and music historian...
The pivoted arm experiment is over
Hi Mepearson,You’ve done some solid work in your experiments, and I applaud your putting it all on the line to relate your experiences - this, in light of the fact that many on this and other lists eat their young.I find recommendations like those...
Azimuth observations and importance
While I too am a proponent of using your ears to get azimuth right, I think that people need to be shown what a locked in azimuth adjustment sounds like. So, either a tool or a mentor can help you find a baseline, after which your ears tell the re...
Analog upgrade path for less than $1200
People have forgotten how outstanding Jim Hagerman's designs are - both on an absolute basis as well as at their price point. Do you solder? Buy a Hagerman Coronet in kit form (~ $400 to build http://www.hagtech.com/cornet2.html), a Dual 1219 or e...
Tri-Planar grounding question...
A while ago, I documented the conversion of a Tri-Planar from RCA termination to balanced XLR, for use with my Atma-Sphere MP-1 preamp. The photos in this website might help you visualize the discussion above: http://www.galibierdesign.com/prd_trip...
Mylar tape on Teres has lots of static.
Ground the bearing. Stripping the silver off of the Mylar won't resolve static issues, but grounding should.Cheers,Thom @ Galibier
DaVinci tonearm and azymuth
Listen to Doug and Raul, and while you're at it, learn to play a musical instrument or to sing. This will help you to trust the most important component in your hi-fi system - the "ear-brain"I spend more time in my conversations with customers on ...
DaVinci tonearm and azymuth
Hello Ebalog,0.5 degrees is FAR too coarse of an increment for setting azimuth. I don't care what the numbers tell you. Now, you could get lucky and effect an improvement (say for example that you're off by 0.7 degrees and reduce the error to 0.2)...
What would you chose? VPI MKIII vs. Linn LP-12
A Merrill or a Merrill modified AR would be my choice.Cheers,Thom @ Galibier
Convert cartridge output voltage to db gain
Hi Jmcgrogan2,Yes, I hate to post redundant information. Frequently, calculations like this need a working example, and hence the cross-link. Now that I had the opportunity to go through the thread, it looks as if we have everything covered. The p...
Convert cartridge output voltage to db gain
Hi Jmcgrogan2,I don't have time to run through some of the likely great responses you received on this thread. Holiday activities beckon (happy holidays to all).In case some of the above advice has you stumped, , I dleve into this issue in a threa...
