Most Rockingest Preamp south of $2k used My experience with SS pre's is that they tended to be a little light in the mids and lower freq's, plus they lacked the warmth in a tubed pre. Tubed pre's had more meat on the sound, which to me sounded way better with rock. There's a Rogue Perseu...
Tube Amp,Solid State Preamp. I need to get to the bottom of this, but on the webpage for my Usher 6381's it says "goes better with SS amps". I assume, perhaps, that it's because their rating (87db/8ohm) isn't the easiest to drive (but not THAT hard, I would think??). Still, i...
Most Rockingest Preamp south of $2k used This may sound crazy, but I just picked up a Shindo Aurieges L. We'll see if:1. It plays well with rock (and others), but more importantly,2. It synergizes with my amp with its high output impedance. Really just picked it up to hear what all the h...
Power conditioner/protection question I think it's a YMMV thing. I tried plugging in both my tubed pre and SS amp straight into the wall (a PS Power Port outlet) and it sounded slightly less dynamic then plugging both units into the Quintet.
Power conditioner/protection question Good to go
Power conditioner/protection question I don't believe its the worth of your system as a ratio to the worth of your power conditioner. The power conditioner should be good enough to do its job, period. I use a PS Audio Quintet (Duet's big brother). This is a non-limiting unit, which me...
Most Rockingest Preamp south of $2k used Wondering about the audio mirror stuff. Looks like the requisite 'passionate small company' and a few good reviews/comments like yours I've read. Is the PP1 significantly different then the other one outside of chassis and phono?
Most Rockingest Preamp south of $2k used No, I haven't. I know it's a non-tangible, but I don't get excited about that brand. Maybe its the dual vol knobs. who knows.
Most Rockingest Preamp south of $2k used Morgoth, still on the hunt. Like i said, Rogue is a great place to start, and just may be where one can end. I just haven't had the luxury of trying many pre's. But the Metis was damn good.
Croft precession 1 or Rogue Magnum 99 ? I've had a Metis. Lower line but same blood. It rocked! I've heard that about Rogue's in general. I would think the 99 would be even better.
VAC owners, sound off My last ditch-resort (prob just confirming the unfortunate known) is to put in a call to Kevin Hayes and go over some specs. Plan on doing that today. If that goes as expected, I'll put this VAC up on the 'gon and use the $ to get something that h...
VAC owners, sound off The VAC has an even lower output impedence than the AH. One of the lower ones i've seen in fact @ 350. Based on that you'd think it would mate fine with my amp rated at 55k input.
VAC owners, sound off Thanks Tvad. You're an asset here.Did you mention Audio Horizons in particular because you think it will better suit my needs or because they are a company with a 30 day? (or both)
VAC owners, sound off don't know if that contributed to the issue in this case, but gain was exactly as you described -- loud at about a quarter way or less on the dial. Is there a spec to determine if gain on a pre will match up well with your amp?
VAC owners, sound off I surmised the same thing. Outside of impedance matching, is there any other specs to check between pre and amp for compatibility before rolling the dice? |
