Passive Preamps
Tholt, not necessarily.Lrsky votes for an active preamp. I give props to Lrsky's recommendations.Yet, I own a passive preamp (SMc Audio VRE-1).Tvad (Threads | Answers)My point was that Phaelon advocated your opinion, which was advocating Lrsky's o...

Wow. A vote by a member for another member for another member. That carries some weight. By the Kevin Bacon theory I'm now 1 against 3.
SET with inefficient speakers
Nice thing about audiogon, you can roll amps as easily as you can roll tubes...I'm having success with a tubed amp on my speakers, despite manu claims that they 'sound best' with SS amps. I have a Cary Rocket, definitely not SET, but the power out...

Anti-Cabls Ic's alternatives?
I would stick with the Anti brand if you already have and like their speaker cable. IMO you can't go wrong with the same brand wiring your entire rig. Likely, you'll be fine and experience no RF interference. I myself run unshielded cabling in my ...

One more point I would like to add is that in case of TVC the amp's input sensitivity is VERY important. With a TVC, the input sensitivity of a power amp better be below 1.5V.Why is this? Is it because of the TVC volt-to-current conversion from th...
Best value in 5 chan. power amp under $3,000

Passive Preamps
It is good to note that passives come in different flavors. I am not a technical expert in this, but a transformer volume control - TVC - I understand will generally work better and in more instances then just a resistive attenuated volume control...
What did you get after the Minimax pre ?
- Edit - my last sentence sounded preachy, not my intent. Shouldn't have said it. Everyone here says it, everyone wants to believe it... but not everyone buys it
What did you get after the Minimax pre ?
I'd wager that it's a case of 'the grass is greener..'. After a time every restless audiophile needs to experience the actual giant instead of the 'giant killer'.Price, ego and 'what if?' seem to go hand in hand -- the lower the price of one thing...

Yup, so far I like my Promitheus ref 4 better then any active I've had. Ludimagis makes a good point -- passive by nature doesn't add any gain so you'll need a cd player or source with enough voltage to essentially feed through to your amp. Things...
Preamp w/ xlrs in the ht-bypass loop
I admit not reading the above responses thoroughly but the passive/active Wyred 4 Sound STP preamp fits the bill. Very, very transparent but with body, overly built, active after 63db of gain (passive up to it) and assignable inputs, one of which ...
I need help with my Equipment addiction
New tubes. Even more new tubes. Oh and some shiny brass footers. Telling yourself these things are pretty cheap doesn't work when you buy them all at once.
How much does CD player affect overall sound?
As a follow up if you haven't treated the room, as unsexy as that may sound, one cd player from another won't ever sound as good as they could, nor your system for that matter.
How much does CD player affect overall sound?
My audiophile friend of 30 years in the biz, both in audio and studio recording, summed that what you heard from your stereo was comprised of 70% speakers, 20% room and 10% components. This is probably pretty close. I might take a few % points fro...
