Really Inexpensive Systems That Sounded Great? Best inexpensive combo I had was NAD326BEE driving Monitor Audio GR10’s - amazingly good sound.
Albums you do not get...a plea for help and understanding Bands that are, or were, really big and popular that I can’t understand the appeal: Rush - my all time most hated band by a wide margin - words can not describe how awful I think their music is. Boston - just ughh U2 - first album is pretty good...
Turntable noobie...what advice do you have? Mississippi Records in North Portland has the best prices, and you can listen to used vinyl before you buy - highly recommended.
I feel bad for GenX'ers that missed out on the 60s and 70s. I was born in the 60’s, and you are welcome to keep listening to the same old classic rock crap - if I never here another Zeppelin, or Eagles song again, I’ll be perfectly happy. There is so much music out there, that it blows my mind that classic...
Suggest one obsure album we all should hear Not that obscure . . . but Lhasa De Sela's "The Living Road"
Audio Lessons Learned - post your best advice for the newer members! Don't equate higher price with better sound. I spent quite a bit of time and money trying to best my rather modest original set-up that I sold. Eventually got it right, but it was infuriating, and time consuming.

Advice on best mid priced MM cartridge choice for Rega P3 (2016) If you are patient, you can usually find a Rega Exact selling new on Ebay, or somewhere in the $300 ballpark. I've had two in the past several years, and it's a really nice cartridge - especially with the Rega table.
Phono preamp worth it with MM cartridges? Except for speakers, I have almost the exact same gear. First off, I think the Exact is excellent, and I’m on my second one. I run a Parks Audio Budgie as my phono amp, and couldn’t be happier with the sound. They don’t come up for sale that often...
Best "Bang for the Buck" you have owned? Combination of NAD 326BEE amp and Monitor Audio GR10 speakers - Amazingly good sound for the price. Still kind of wish I hadn't sold them, but, unfortunately, don't have the space for more than one system.
...bookshelf speakers that sound good at low volume... Ascend Acoustics Sierra 2 - I love that they sound full, and detailed even at lower volumes
Speakers that are a great value! Another vote for Ascend Acoustics - I’ve had their Sierra 2’s for a few years now, and feel no need to “upgrade”. Great value.
Best debut album Tie between Elvis Costello’s My AIM Is True, and The Violent Femmes debut
MOBILE FIDELITY ONE STEP VINYL The best thing about the One Steps . . . reselling! I got the first Bill Evans for $100 - the day it arrived I sold it in one hour on eBay for $325. Tidy profit to offset some more reasonable vinyl purchases. Luckily I'm not the guy that needs to ...
A moderate priced dac I got a used Rega DAC for just under $500, and have been loving it. |
