Sibelius Symphonies
If you like Sibelius, don't miss the classic Heifetz/Hendl/Chicago SO performance of the Sibelius Violin Concerto on RCA, far and away the greatest recording ever made of this magnificent work, by the violinist who "owned" this piece as few other ...
Sibelius Symphonies
I've been a Sibelius buff for 40 years and have many recordings of the symphonies, including the complete sets by Maazel (Decca/London), Bernstein (Sony), Berglund (EMI), Jarvi (BIS), Rattle (EMI), both the Davis sets (Boston on Philips and London...
Your auditioning music?
Viridian, mea culpa, I take it all back: I was sure you were putting us on with that Pat Boone "In a Metal Mood" record, but my God, you're not, it's not a joke, it ACTUALLY EXISTS! Positively scary! Ought to make a good party record when everyone...
Chailly Mahler 9th
On the vexed subject of DG's sound quality, I found their orchestral sound mediocre for years, but with the adoption of their then-new 4D recording process/technology in 1992, DG's orchestral sound got a whole lot better. The sound on most of the ...
Your auditioning music?
Hey Viridian, that Pat Boone recording you give such a glowing testimonial to, wasn't that in the same series as Sinatra Sings Ted Nugent, Rap Classics by Bing Crosby, and Perry Como Sings Hip-Hop Hits? I've been looking for those too. I've got a ...
Your auditioning music?
Can't wait to get that Pat Boone recording--sounds like the one I've been waiting for. Thanks, Viridian.
Benjamin Britten Songs
Naxos has an excellent series of Britten recordings. If you get their 2005 catalog, usually free, you can see all that's available. New/recent recordings include Volumes One and Two of his Orchestral Song Cycles; another CD of St. Nicholas, Christ...
Guilty Pleasure via Reader’s Digest
Most of the classical and light classical Reader's Digest material recorded by Gerhardt and Wilkinson has been remastered and released on CD by Chesky. I have a number of these. The remasterings are first-rate, and the sound of the Wilkinson-engin...
Is the BMG issue dead?
Yes, the BMG issue is totally dead, and if you'd checked the archives before starting this thread, you'd know that. This question has been thoroughly answered and thoroughly put to rest.
Best recording / performance Dvorak Cello conc.
Well, just to mix it up some more, here are some CDs I have that I can recommend:1. Dvorak & Walton Cello Concertos, Gregor Piatigorsky, Munch, Boston SO. RCA Living Stereo.2. Dvorak Concerto & Bruch Kol Nidrei, Lynn Harrell, Ashkenazy, Ph...
Sound Quality of Remastered CD's
I agree that there is no general rule and that you have to take remastering quality on a case-by-case basis or series-by-series basis. Like you I have experienced CDs that were superior to the original LPs and others that were inferior. In general...
Spectacular Drum Set?
I started this thread months ago and had almost forgotten about it until just recently, when I heard the spectacular drum set to end all spectacular drum sets. A friend who went to CES in January came back with a demo CD from Usher Audio that was ...
El Salon Mexico -- old edgy version
I'd like to second the recommendation of the Dorati/Detroit SO version on Decca/London. A fine, rousing performance in excellent sound. It's the one I listen to.
Instruments of the Orchestra
For anyone interested in this thread, by a happy serendipity I found (stumbled across it in a used CD store) exactly what I was looking for when I initiated this thread: a two-CD set from Vanguard Classics (released 1996) called A Demonstration of...
Pure Note Paragon users, comments apprecaited...
On a quality-for-the-buck basis in today's high-end audio market, I don't believe you can beat Purist Audio Musaeus. My second choice would be Harmonic Technology Pro-Silway MkIII. Both of these contain some silver, but are not thin or bright.
