Upgrade for Thiel 1.6 - Or a waste of $$
One of the most amazing (smallish) systems I ever heard was Thiel 1.5s with a single Vandersteen sub.I had 3.5s at the time (I just repurchased a used set for my basement) and I liked the balance his set-up a lot.A sub set up with the Vandy or som...
Advices for Audio Reseach Reference preamp
I bought my Vandy 5A in Chicago from a dealer who was also a ARC dealer. Later when in the market for a good preamp (got back into vinyl) I talked to the guy who sold me my Vandys. He said the Ref2 was softer than the MkII. Maybe too much so for s...
Theta Miles & Pass Aleph 3?
If its enough power, its an easy upgrade IMO. I've had Aleph 2s for ten years. I first auditioned the 3, Bryston 4 and others, before ordering the 2s. I thought the 3 might have souned slightly better than the 2s but it was too little power in tha...
lexicon mc12b vs.pass labs x1
LexiconphileI have a Lex 12B. When I moved into my now house 5 years ago my 2 ch source was a Wadia 860. I tried using the dacs/pre function from the 12B but the Wadia was clearly better. The Wadia drove Pass Aleph 2s.Got back into LPs a couple ye...
Amplifier / system matching w/ Vandy 5a
Fjn04What do you think of the 5A match with vac 220 and Quicky V4?TD
Vandersteen 3a sigs/ 2wq vs. 5a or 5
I own 5As and would look at it this way; In a 3 sig / 2w system with components that one might expect, IMO inserting 5As would be something of the difference you have above with redbook CD and HT. But the "gap" would widen if one upgrades the rest...
Vandersteen 5A's in Home Theater
The 5As are great for a number HT setups. They image so well you might be able to go with out a center channel if your screen is not too big. I went with out one for many years though I now use a center with my 106" diag screen. There are tradeoff...
Pass X1 or BAT 51 SE to drive Pass Aleph 1.2 ?
GaddierI liked what Rayhall said and would add... I have Aleph 2 monos and after looking around a lot two years ago I bought a ARC Ref 2 mkII. I run balnaced. It mates well with the 2s. Big sound stage and good dynamics. My phono pre is a Ayre P-5...
Amplifier for Vandersteen 5A' s ?
You can add used VTL sig450 to the list.I have 5As and have been looking around too. Unless you are in hurry your Pass W-600s should work well.I called Richard Vandersteen a while ago. After he realized I was serious, I told him that I had Pass Al...
Calling on Vandersteen 5a owners
RobI've had my 5A for almost 2 years. A great product, very happy. My standard walnut is very nice but not great IMO.Have not seen the cherry in person either but several months ago a pair in cherry was for sale here with outstanding pix. Don't re...
Vandersteen x-over question
Yes, I think it would work. Can't think of why not. Though it does not seem like the best set up with the extra pre amp stage doing little or nothing for you.TD
Help finishing sound room w/ Vandy 5a
Fjn04,I have 5As - a great product IMO.Just want to confirm your decision to save $ on carpet. You may want to spend the diff on stiffining the floor, treating side wall first reflection points or adding bass traps (I use Realtraps Mini Traps - I ...
PassLabs X250 X350 and X250.5
I remember the 350.5 running a fair amount higher in class A mode than the 250.5. That may be part of a better difference for the 350.5.I just went to the web site quick but could not find the numbers. I thought it was something like 35 vs 65 clas...
Pass Labs Aleph Question
I have Aleph 2s driving Vandy 5As. The 2s were driving SC IVAs before that and did a very job of it. The 2/IVA combo was set up in two rooms. The first one was 14x16x8.5 feet. This setup, on a short wall, (with Wadia 860 direct) was really good, b...
ARC Reference 2 MkII Preamp white noise levels
FWIW, Last night I fired up the system and turned up the volume all the way. Not much noise, and I need to be within 3-5 feet to hear it. For contrast, with the volume at max for phono listening, 1 to 2 oclock range, I can hear the noise from my A...
