Merlin VSM/MMe with Berning ZH-270
I also have mme's with Berning ZH 270 and second the recommendation of a pre-amp. I have a modest Herron vtsp1 preamp and the system is excellent. I do find on mine, best to keep volume control on Berning not too high (10 o'clock maybe) and crank ...
SS amps for merlin vsm
My experience is "spot on" with Tubegroover. If you can find a ZX270, by all means try it. For me it is almost unbelievable that such an un-imposing little box can do what it does. I purchased the amp a few years ago and have never even bothered t...
SS amp for Merlin VSMs?
My only datapoint is swapping the Berning ZH-270 out of my VSM mme rig with the Audio Research 100.2. As much as I consider the 100.2 probably the finest solid state amp that I have owned, it just doesn't compare with the Berning driving the VSM's.
Three best audiophile CD/LP in your collection
Not sure about the Audiophile label, but I will offer 3 great sounding, easy to get, 'out of the mainstream' picks from deep inside my CD collection: 1). Jo Jones, the Everest years - fantastic drumming, 2). JJ Cale, "5", Polygram, and 3). Chet At...
Inexpensive sub for MG12's
I struggled with the right low cost sub with my Magnepan MC-1's (down model from your MC-12's). After a few loaners from a good dealer, I settled on the Vandersteen 2wq. I've seen them on A'gon for not too much more than $500. They do require a cr...
Cat Stevens Tea for the Tillerman LP's
This thread brings back memories: I bought my brand new UHQR copy of "Tea for the Tillerman" in the late 1980's from the closeout bin of a record store. They were moving out LP's to make room for CD's. I still remember a sign on the closeout bin t...
House speaker wires advise?
A couple other choices you might want to consider are Kimber KWIK-12 or KWIK-16, and Canare 4s11. I have used both for in wall with very good results. You might want to spring a bit more for your basement, kitchen, etc and go cheaper for the bathr...
What's your favorite remake of a song
This thread wouldn't be complete without mentioning Sid Vicious's version of "My Way", Wilson Pickett's remake of "Hey Jude", and James Brown's wonderful rendition of "The Tennessee Waltz".
Help with isolation for Linn LP12 on wood floor
My experience dating back 25 years is that the LP-12 doesn't like any sort of wall unit. I still use my original Sound Organisation table from the 1980's which is a simple stiff lightweight steel frame table which holds only the LP-12. It has spik...
Cars. What does the typical audiophile drive?
1) I go-through alot of company cars and have to say that the new Caddy STS-V6 that I'm driving is "da bomb". 3) If price was no object ... how about a '37 Cord Sportsman and a '36 Auburn boattail Speedster - or maybe a '41 Packard Darrin concedin...
1st, most memorable recording...
Van Morrison's "Moondance", in the mid 1980's on a friends LP-12 late at night with the lights out, probably under the influence.
Waltz for Debby-Bill Evans Trio
Ditto, I've also been listening to 'Waltz for Debbie' alot lately and it's a standout. Other jazz standouts, IMO, getting playtime in my system recently include: Coleman Hawkins 'The Hawk Relaxes' and 'At ease with Coleman Hawkins', Dexter Gorden ...
Magnepan MC1 & MC3 on-wall speakers
As I responded in Riley's thread, I really like my MC-1's and feel they are worth every penny of the $750 I paid for them new. One of the better resources I found to learn about Maggies, in general, is 'MUG', Magnepan Users Group at 'www.integraco...
Great music but poor recording recommendations.
Nina Simone, Live at the Village Gate, captures a wonderful performance; but, the recording engineer must have been asleep.
Anyone rediscovering their old LP's?
A non-audiophile friend stopped by Saturday night. I had previously told him about my new record cleaner, and suggested he bring some of his old LP's over and we would clean them and give them a listen. They sounded good and we had a fun evening. ...
