HELP: is Monarchy Audio DAC a good idea?
Of course the 18B has a preamp built in, and a quite healthy voltage output, if I remember correctly. It's not that you 'bypass the idea of a preamp', but you do save the cost of an extra pair of interconnects. no reason this should not work well.
EAD ultradisc 2000
you'd need a preamp. also the U2000 does not have balanced outputs, only single-ended.
Amplifier Upgrade advice ?
depends on what you're trying to accomplish by upgrading the amp...give more details. I don't know how much experience you have with upgrading, but sonic magic does not necessarily occur following the outlay of $$...
McCormack Preamp???
The passive is a good route so long as you get a CD player with a very good, stable, low impedance, high voltage output stage. Somewhere along the line you need good preamplification for proper dynamics. If you can find such a player, then the vol...
Need more power
An amp change will not nececssarily solve your problem. Let the speakers burn is for some time, change around the placement. I assume you're doing that. Also try borrowing a good active preamp, it may be that the passive pre is contributing to the...
Best amp for 5k used? SS or Tube
no contest...the musicality and accuracy of these amps is the best. forget the ss muscle amps.if you don't want to deal with replacing output tubes, buy a new Aria WT-100, over 100 w/ch in a hybrid design (tube input, ss output), under $4k new w/ ...
help with a sometimes boomy sounding room..
if your room is really 10x13x7 it's just too small to not give boomy bass.I recommend the following: get the speakers further into the room and sit closer to them, turn the volume down, and in the last resort, try simpler cables/different music.or...
Help on amp choice.
can't go wrong with the Sunfire 300 IMO!
Taddeo Digital Antidote
I have the passive $100 version. It makes cheaper digital (mine: Sony Dvp-S7000) sound very good, makes music more natural and listenable. Very subtle but important differencces. I would go with the $100 version and if you don't like it, try the m...
Bryston 7B ST - Sounds anaemic. Any help?
Perhaps the Circes' woofers are wired for hi-impedance (suitable for tube amps)... if so change them to the 4-ohm setting (done by dealer or mfg?) Also the bass on these speakers is very well damped so you won't get great gobs of bass. If you had ...
PS Audio vs. Monster - cleaning up the power
Try both...you have to decide when the sound is better. Do not plug your amps into the Monster though, they will compress the sound. I even blew my 2500 plugging amps into them.Unless you have real dirty sounding power, use the UOs and the Juice b...
Cartridge for Rega Planar 3 / RB300
Lower output Grado $3-500 (Platinum or Sonata - 1.5 mv versions since higher outputs can cause hum on this table) is a good match...emphasizes the midrange, beautiful, not the most incisive cartridges but sometimes that's good. For the preamp chec...
Where do I go from here?
Agree w/ previous suggestions, though the AvantGarde are large and the sound is not for everyone...you might end up not liking the components. The Triangle line are relatively efficient and great on classical. They have a few floorstanders under $2...
Smallest tube system for bed room

Junked audio components - hazardous waste...
Thanks Djjd for an unusually informative post, and to all for their responses. I don't doubt that with respect to hi-end it's a relatively minor issue but still a symptom of a wider problem. Re: the military, Albert, don't get me started, IMO the ...
