R.I.P. Joe Cocker
LOL, Miner42
Joe Cocker...R.I.P.
I saw Joe at Fillmore East and again at Woodstock in the summer of '69, during his first U.S. tour. At the Fillmore, he opened, IIRC, for Jefferson Airplane and blew everyone away w his singing AND his unusual gyrations, which I always interpreted...
Buzz coming from power amp - not through speakers
If it's loud enough to hear over moderate volume music, I'm guessing it's not the typical transformer "buzz". The periodic nature of it concerns me. Of course, trying the typical fixes for that problem described by others can't hurt. Not sure I'd ...
High Fidelity Cables CT-1designed by Rick Schultz
It's like a faucet with a bigger more free flowing spout. Are you talking about the cable or the $$$ flowing from your bank account to Rick Schultz's? $100K (or more) for a full loom of cables? Get real...this is one of the key reasons why people...
New Variac for Joule Electra Amps
Outlier- Should have thought to suggest talking to Signature Sound...they have always been heavily involved w Joule (and Merlin) gear. As for build quality, it's not only electrical reliability, but also mechanical that I was concerned with. That ...
New Variac for Joule Electra Amps
Outlier- That seems to jibe w my experience w the VZN-80...not the sturdiest construction, that's for sure! Not to denigrate the sound, but no one could Jud of going the 1/2" thick CNC-machined faceplate route ;-)
Do you enjoy the sound at your local Theater Plex?
Drubin - I wish I had been to your IMAX! I thought the visuals were great at the IMAX in Westminster, CO, but the LFE channel was turned up so loud I could not hear the dialog. There are several posts on the web about it, so it wasn't just my agin...
New Variac for Joule Electra Amps
Jea- Yes this a purpose-built variac on the Joule amps. Given the heat load that 16 of those 6cc3b tubes put out, there must be a $hitload of juice (that's as technical as I get) of current or voltage or whatever being dissipated by those amps to ...
Single driver speakers without the pitfalls?
I have gone part way down the single driver path w a pair of DIY open baffle speakers that I bought from a member here, and I like them very much. They use the Feastrex 5" field coil driver w a whizzer cone, running full range, no x-over. The low ...
Help picking a tube preamp, please
Don't know about the current crop but my VK3i had 99 steps and a remote. Some consider them a bit on the dark side. VAC pre-amps have remote and are among the best out there. I do not believe that mine had discrete steps.
Any other Sophia Amplifier Experiences???
Analogluvr- My bad (sort of)! There were some problems with the 300b mono-blocks that JA measured but not (apparently) w the OPTs. Check out the measurement section and you will see that there is something unusual going on w those amps. And if you...
Any other Sophia Amplifier Experiences???
FWIW, S=phile had qc problems with a pair of 300b monoblocks that they had for review, IIRC.
The Latest in Digital Out for Mobile Devices?
Astell Kern has a line of hi-rez portable players (AK-100, AK-200, etc.)that can output digital data stream via an 1/8" jack. I know that they will play 24/96 and the newer models play DSD but I'm not sure if they can send that out as digital data...
mccormack tlc-1 front panel knobs slipping
Good fix that should work fine. If u want to know the screw size just contact SMcAudio and you'll get a quick and helpful rely.
Hearing issues and signal attenuation
One other thought- how about putting an adjustable l-pad just on the high side of the crossover on the "good" side and then when you determine the right value, replace it w a v. high quality resistor.
