Great Recordings, Sonically Speaking - and Why.
Audio friends, I've got to wonder, reading the posts in this thread, if any listeners have purchased a record since about 1980! (And I'm 70).There are countless fabulous recordings produced in the last few years alone, not to mention the '90s, '20...
Tube vs. Solid State Amplifiers
I was an SS guy for thirty years until I purchased a modern KT120 tube amp. Wonderful! However, the reliability issues and the regular cost of replacing tubes was onerous. I happily went back to various SS amps, including D-class.Eventually I came...
Is D for Dry? Class D...
It's ridiculous to lump class D amps together as having a particular sound. It's just as nuts as lumping together all class A/B amps, or tube amps together. The variety of amplification outcomes in each type of amp is so varied that I challenge an...
How many vinyl albums do you own you listen to?
703 albums here......over 40 years. A lean collection. 550 of these I purchased at thrift stores, in the epoch when whole NM collections were being dumped. Virtually free. I've only purchased 150 new albums. I have not had a good experience of buy...
What do we hear when we change the direction of a wire?
There are two choices. The difference is audible. The difference is not audible. The only way to know is an unbiased listening testI agree. Absent a quantitative analytical procedure for testing audible directionality, then a well set up listening...
What do we hear when we change the direction of a wire?
As an engineer I can tell you don’t always rely on instrument measurements to decipher human experience. That's right, and your statement illuminates the unreliability of human experience as a component of quantitative analysis. Thus the field of p...
What do we hear when we change the direction of a wire?
Clearly, regardless of the scientific advancement, our sensory systems are still better than the best instruments. No they are not. It's not even debatable.
Class D for a Tube Lover
"I run a PS Audio Stellar S300 with a tube pre and find the combination excellent."Me too, just the same set-up. It's the best sound I've ever enjoyed, so much so that I feel no inclination to leap for the M700 monoblocks. There is something very ...
Raven Audio Nighthawk
"I find much to admire with the Raven gear. However, more than one person has commented about a hum problem they could not get rid of. Might want to talk to Dave about that before you pull the trigger."Yes, I experienced hum from a well-used Bla...
Is It Time To Sell My Vinyl Rig?
@goofyfoot if your vinyl collection is only around 200 LPs, you have already decided some time ago on which medium you like to listen to. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy. People into vinyl, without almost any effort, will amass a collection of tho...
Speaker cable length
There are a lot of other audio set-up aspects far more relevant than fretting over unequal speaker wire lengths. I saved considerable money on my 12ft/20 ft pair.
Looking for a CD player
"How about the border patrol dac? Any experience?"Yes. In fact I upgraded from a CD player at $1500 by getting the Border Patrol SE DAC. It was a sizable step up. I still use the Cd player (LM-215) as the transport. Love it.
Desire to try tubes
bilyeauxbrew, I tried the PS Audio GCD and S300 on extended review.I have to tell you that replacing the GCD with a tube preamp yielded a really great improvement and synergy with the S300 amplifier (which I rate highly). In my case, I replaced it ...

Who buy PS AUDIO ?
I love their Stellar S300 power amp......oodles of grunt, great dynamics, wonderful timbres. The best amp I've had in my house, ever. The guys who work at PS Audio are really pleasant and personal to deal with.Their trade-in program is excellent t...
