next step for my setup? advice appreciated
Hi Folks, just a quick update as I have greatly appreciated everyone's feedback. I bought a Valab DAC and it offers a definite improvement over the analog inputs. I since found a Rotel RSP985 on a'gon which is a digital pre/pro and I'll sell the Va...
Next step: tube pre or tube power amp?
Hi Jmcgrogan2,thanks for that input and I'd considered heat. Our AV cabinet is open - a cutout in the wall of the house, essentially, so it has plenty of ventilation above and around it. I use a fake green planty thingy in front to cover the front...
Next step: tube pre or tube power amp?
Thanks guys for the feedback. My speakers are GR Research AV3s in an AV2 cabinet. They are 8ohm nominal/6ohm minimal and 91db sensitive. I may one day move to the GR Research Neo2x which are the same rating, but much less sensitive - 85db. I'd pre...
Home Theater 101 - Subwoofer question?
I assume you're ok shopping used? Craigslist has a ton of decent subs under $200. The Paradigm, some Boston, Polk subs are decent for that budget. As for new, partsexpress.com has some decent Dayton subs for the little money invested.
next step for my setup? advice appreciated
Hi Folks,This is great feedback: I'll likely start by adding a DAC to the system seeing as how it will improve two components - the itunes/airport and the oppo. New power cords and footers for the oppo and rotel sound like a simple improvement to ...
next step for my setup? advice appreciated
Hi Guys, thanks very much for the input. As a guitarist, I'm very interested in going tube somehow, but don't have the budget for it. My budget is sub $500 and I'm a DIYer, so I'm happy to build my own DAC or even attempt a preamp. Jylee: so you're...
rotel rsp976 or rsp980 advice please
Hi Soixthanks for your response and advice. My concern was if a pro logic processor could offer true center channel separation without a digital signal. My understanding is that pro logic was, at best, an attempt at surround, but not true surround...
pro logic unit instead of 2 channel preamp?
Hi Johnny, thanks for your suggestions and they certainly won't go in vain as you can imagine, I've caught the bug pretty bad and will likely be tweaking and trading for some time. since my past post, I couldn't get past the 960ax's lack of bass (g...
$300 used preamp to match my rotel?
Hi folks, here's a quick update on where I landed:-- I went with a GR Research DIY kit and I've had it playing for a week now. I'm guessing I've put 30 hours on it so far, so its on the way to being burned in. I put $365 into these speakers and I'm...
Old power amp with newer preamp?
I traded the old RSP960ax for an old RSP980 (I can't believe how inexpensive these old pro logic processors are.) The RSP980 offers much better detail, better bass, better dynamics. Clearly a superior unit. the GR Research kit speakers are really ...
Old power amp with newer preamp?
I thought I should offer an update. I bought a dented (but completely functional) Rotel RB 980BX power amp off audiogon and paired it with a Rotel RSP 960ax processor. I also built my own DIY speakers from a GR Research kit. $150 total in the rote...
$300 used preamp to match my rotel?
Hi Folks, just an update on where I've temporarily landed. A local guy was selling a Rotel RSP-960AX surround processor/preamp on craigslist, so I bought it for $50. I hooked it up to the Rotel power amp and the combination clearly outshines the ol...
pro logic unit instead of 2 channel preamp?
Hi Folks, just a quick update. I got back from my trip last night and checked the local craigslist. A guy up the road was selling a Rotel RSP-960ax for $50 so I snapped it up today. This is the older Pro Logic processor with a 2 channel stereo opti...
pro logic unit instead of 2 channel preamp?
Yes, I'm sending itunes music wirelessly to the airport express and its a fun way to listen to music, but I've often wondered if the sound quality suffers. I also like the convenience of the video and future subwoofer abilities of a pro logic prea...
$300 used preamp to match my rotel?
Thanks guys - I really appreciate all these suggestions. I have limited knowledge good brands, so this helps in my research. I've seen that rotel 1070 on the agon classifieds - mighty tempting at that price.Steve
