Do all FM tuners need alignment eventually?
My take on it is this: a solid state tuner would probably not ever need a realignment unless it was shipped (and jostled around) or one of the internal components have failed.A tube tuner might need realignment if certain (but not all) tubes fail ...
Excessive woofer movement with a VPI JMW 9 ?
I hesitantly tried the KAB Rumble filter to address the same problem you're having - excessively pumping woofers. I'm glad to report it really did the trick, and with no sonic compromises I can detect. An added, unexpected bonus: my table seems mu...
tube amp for ProAc Response.. need suggestions
I'm using a Cary SLA-70 (35w/ch) with ProAc 2S's. Sounds bea-U-tee-full! Very tuneful and 'punchy' sounding. These speakers are very kind to tube amps, and visa-versa.I heard both ProAc 1SC's and 2S's with an Audio Research VT60 (50w/ch) amp years...
Tube pre around 1000, Audible Illusions or belles
Apologies in advance for not responding with the two units you referred to in mind, but I recently got an Audio Electronic Supply (AES/Cary) AE-3 preamp that is very minimalist (only 3 inputs and one set of outputs) but MAN, this thing has blown m...
Vic Chesnutt, RIP
Jdoris (John),I think what Rwwear is referring to is the fact that Vic was wheelchair-bound as a result of a teenaged drunk driving incident, if memory serves.
Please help, Tube subsitute for 6sn7
Tpreaves -Thanks for the interesting link.
What's in your Wadia iTransport system?
I have a Monarchy DIP 24/94 between my Wadia iTransport and my tubed CAL Alpha DAC, and there is no 'hard edge' to speak of (1m Kimber D60 from Wadia to DIP, .5m Orchid AES/EBU from DIP to DAC). Sounds like you've taken car of one of the main cons...
I have a Jolida 302b and I'm looking for tube rec?
I have a Cary SLA-70 in which I have tried EL34s, 6550's and KT88's. By far the best sound in my system has been with the Gold Lion re-issue KT88's. Very robust, quiet tube, with just the right touch of 'sweetness' in this Class A circuit. I know ...
The Hub: ''Handcrafted Ralph Gleason'' ?
I was afraid your post was going to lambast Dertubemeister's Ralph Gleason ad, and was relieved as I read on that your take on it was one of appreciation and admiration. I guess you also agree that 'fun' and 'perfectionist audio' can actually coex...
Tube vs. Solid State Rectifier
If you end up preferring tube rectification over SS, the next question might be: then how much of a difference do different rectifier tubes make? I have a Cary SLA-70 I bought here on Audiogon a couple of weeks ago that uses 5AR4 rectifiers. I hav...
Scotch? No thanks. Whats the best Vodka.?
My response above left the actual name of the vodka out -- it's Monopolova.
Scotch? No thanks. Whats the best Vodka.?
Austrian potato vodka in the generic-looking white-labelled bottle with "Vodka" in plain blue letters. Used to be very expensive until their distribution got a little better.Makes a smooth, easy-to-drink martini - doesn't taste like if you coughed...
The Bad Plus - where to start?
Interesting comment Jazdoc - I just saw the new one at the local CD store and wondered about the whole vocalist thing (didn't pick it up as I already had a bigstack of vinyl in my clutches).Cool thing I read about the band (if it's true): apparent...
Recommendations for good jazz radio stations
KRTU 91.7 FM out of Trinity University in San Antonio, TX. Fantastic programming at all-jazz college station. The good stuff, too (if you like your 'smooth jazz', this isn't the station for you).Log on at call letters >dot< org. Bookmark it!...
Audio Research CA50 + tube rolling
I think you'll find that the consensus on those Sovtek 6922's is that they are sturdy and reliable tubes available in production quantities (the reasons ARC uses them) that happen to sound 'harmonically bleached' and about as far from the sought-a...
