Can you COMBINE Magnepan speakers
I know someone who uses 2 large pairs [3.6s I think] in the manner Alistair Aikman-Robertson [sp?] at Quad used the 63s. That is at a 90 degree angle fasten together at the base. He likes it.
Do subwoofers really help?
No. Bandaid at best. Change either the speaker or amp. I use subs but run them full range so they have no effect on the amp or speaker.
Why so negative about McIntosh speakers?
I should have added that one of my friends has Mac amp and Pre Amp,Top SS Pre Amp, he just sold a 275 tube and bought a top end Mac SS amp. I don't think he has ever considered Mac speakers, had Quad 2905s and now has Martin Logan Spires. He certa...
Why so negative about McIntosh speakers?
I have not heard anyone deny that the early Mac speakers were dogs. As they say, you never get a second chance to make a first impression. I think most of us just lost interest as it appeared that their speakers were simply there for those who wan...
Marchand
I am now really confused. The reason why I don't buy or build active speakers of another brand [I have had some] is that I like the sound of the Spendors better and wanted to optimize it. They did make an active version but the company has changed...
Inverted Amplifiers
My RELs instructions indicate that this is best set by ear, in my case out of phase sounded better. The Sumiko site has their set up guide for subs which is simple and helpful.
Why so negative about McIntosh speakers?
I don't know about the later ones but the earlier ones were BAD. A friend of mine paid $1000 , then big money, for a pair to use with his Marantz 7C and model 9s. He kept them a few months and sold them for $500. He later admitted he never liked t...
Inverted Amplifiers
If your amp inverts and your pre doesn't just reverse the lead as E. suggests above, red to black etc. This leaves the whole question of recordings which are made with reversed polarity ; my DAC has a reversal switch and occasionally it makes a co...
Belafonte at Carnegie Hall
I think I have both, either is great. Just listened to the mono last week. Due to two moves and a basement flood my records are now uncataloged so I can't run down and compare them.
Gauge + Length +Material = Sound
Pierre at Mapleshade believes that speaker cable should be at least 8' long so they are not the only ones who have this idea. I don't necessarily agree, I have tried a lot of things and the only thing I have learned is that it is hard to predict w...
which is better ? MC phono stage or MM+step-up ?
I use a very good separate phono stage [Blue Circle 707] AND a step up transformer [Bob's Devices]. Why? Because I like the way it sounds. See the review of Bob's in TEN AUDIO. I am a Blue Circle dealer but not connected with Bob's. This is a tota...
HDMI cable made a difference in picture quality??
I would stay away from Monster Cable for anything [ I was a dealer years ago. ] The Monoprice is very good for the money, I would get one. It is MUCH better than generic cable and you may never want anything else. I used them for a while, I now us...
Sophia 2 with Plinius?
CJ 350 worked very well when HIFICRITIC tested them. Close to 400 watts a channel.
The Hub: Bowers & Wilkins 801: Good, Bad, or Ugly?
There is a Bryston 4BST listed at $999 which should drive them very well, this is for a basic amp. Also a Quad 909 for $799. I doubt if many receivers have the power necessary. The bigger NAD integrated amps might work, Musical Fidelity in their s...
The Hub: Bowers & Wilkins 801: Good, Bad, or Ugly?
There should be quite a number of amps now that are much better than the ones available in the 80s. I would think that GamuT would work well, I have a M3 Musical Fidelity and their big amps, M3, 300, 500,550 should be very good. CJ 350 is expensiv...
