Aligning cart on Rega style arms without defeatable anti-skating?
I am considering getting such a protractor but the issue isn't so much as to get the cartridge to land on the right spot of the protractor, but whether the anti-skate force pulling on the cantilever would cause it to sit askew and not "square" to ...
Aligning cart on Rega style arms without defeatable anti-skating?
Of course the first thing I did was to level the turntable, then zero out the counterweight and anti-skate to attempt to balance the tonearm.  When doing this it is obvious to see that the anti-skate was still somewhat active since the arm will sl...
Using tube amp upside down
Thanks for the suggestion jadedavid.  I experimented further and ditched the bottom panel completely, using Audio Points to drain the energy out directly from the side panels.  This was a huge step in the right direction!  I may think about thread...
Do I really need Desoldering for replacing resistors/caps?
You will need a decent iron to melt the existing solder.  Make sure it can get hot enough and more importantly has a tip of sufficient mass depending on how much metal is connected to the joint you are heating.  I would skip the desoldering irons ...
What is the perferred material for a TT shelf?
I have the Michell Gyrodec which is basically a Gyro on an acrylic platform decoupled with aluminum spikes and aluminum cones as feet on the underside.  Seeing as how Michell chose cones under their acrylic, I'd say that is a good place to start a...
Opinions Needed!
What tubes are you using?  You shouldn't have to replace the small-signal input tubes that often, especially if they are NOS.  Usually they will start getting noisy or microphonic when they need replacing but I find NOS tends to last longer.  Outp...
Synergistic Red Fuse ...
These fuses, and aftermarket fuses in general, intrigue me. What is it about them that improves the sound? I am guessing the fact that there there is so much room for improvement means that stock fuses and fuseholders are an impediment in some way...
Small popping in speakers AFTER solid state amp is shut off
A relay produces a mechanical sound that would not come from the speakers.  I had an old SS amp that eventually died, but before it did it made all sorts of squealing noise after I turned it off.  My guess if that you probably have electrolytic ca...
Abacus Passive LDR
That appears to be substantially the same thing as the Tortuga LDR preamp, using the same parts except for maybe the input switching relays.  I too wonder how it sounds and compares to the Lightspeed.  The main differences are the addition of inpu...
Conrad Johnson CAV 50
I've tried all 3 of those tubes and prefer the JJ E34L.  I find that it is the most balanced top to bottom - organic mids, not too bright, not too slow, and no lack of bass in my setup.  Plus they are cheap to replace.  There are proponents for ea...
Upgrading coupling caps - which ones first?
So far I've been playing around with the .47uF output caps on the amp and right now I am trying to decide which ones are going in there permanently.  After that I will target the DAC.  So far I have tried Jupiter copper foils, Clarity MR, Mundorf ...
Upgrading coupling caps - which ones first?
The caps in the amp are .1 and .47 uF at 600V, and the output caps in the DAC are 3.3uF 200V.  it is probably reasonable to expect that higher values of capacitance and voltage rating will tend to correlate with less ideal behavior of a capacito...
50 hours of research = 1 amp for Totem Sttaf
I own the Totem Ones which are less efficient than the Sttaf and have tried a plethora of amps (SS and tube) with them.  Due to the general consensus that Totems love power, I tried various recommended SS amps including Naim Nait 5, Plinius integr...
Your experience as Yamamoto owner?
Apparently they do not advertise their own gear on their site although I vaguely remember that they used to years back. I've been to the shop a couple times and they collect all kinds of vintage parts that they use in their gear builds. Assuming t...
When do you choose vinyl over digital?
If it was recorded analog then Vinyl. If it was recorded digital it is a crap shoot. If 24/96 or higher transfer I will take the risk and get the vinyl but if 16/44.1 then I would go CD. Is there an easy way to tell how it was recorded? I used to ...
