Bigger and Better: Integrated Amplifiers
This discussion should have had threads in the single digits. I assumed upgrade meant better sounding.
The hunt is over
Any vinylista can never be done as styluses wear out and you have to decide whether or not to have it serviced or replaced. Once you start with that you start thinking about other things. Wish I could only think about the music, but it is impossib...
Turntable upgrade recommendations: SME vs AMG vs Technics vs other
@drbond - you need to make sure the phono stage has lmpedence (load) and gain settings that match what is recommended for the cartridge. Many good ones have several or even continuous settings for these.   Some phono stages are made to work with ...
Turntable upgrade recommendations: SME vs AMG vs Technics vs other
@drbond - most important to match the phono stage to the cartridge and your system in general. Turntables should have no sound - improvements are the elimination of distortion caused by vibrations. Of course you need to make sure the arm works wel...
Turntable upgrade recommendations: SME vs AMG vs Technics vs other
Hey @drbond  - the P8 is extremely light and the only thing that worked for me without counterweights was the Townshend Seismic platform that has pods screwed into the base. The very smallest pods are effective against the 10 pound turntable. If t...
Not sure Rumor or Truth that Max Townshend has passed?
RIP with music playing.
Not sure Rumor or Truth that Max Townshend has passed?
Very nice guy who went out of his way to listen to my exact application/environment for his seismic platform. He told me exactly how it would work technically and was very understated about the tremendous improvement his platform would provide. Sh...
Audiogon resolutions for 2022 - #1 less exaggeration when it comes to system changes
@hilde45 - thanks. The point of my scale is to make it easy without arbitrary terminology. Its subjective as to how much (or not) better something sounds with some change to somebody’s system. if they want to add comments or explanations to the r...
Audiogon resolutions for 2022 - #1 less exaggeration when it comes to system changes
Thats the point of the rating system….no wordsmithing required, just the ability to listen (maybe before and after, but even that may not be necessary) and read the rating definitions. Happy 2022 to all!
Share albums where EVERY SINGLE song is good
There are lots and lots of them on an individual album basis, but only one group's entire catalogue fits this criteria (with a very minor exception).....Steely Dan. Exception is one song where Becker (RIP) sings on their last album. Dire Straits i...
What makes the biggest difference in sound quality?
It starts at the source and goes downstream from there. Most people here are forgetting the proper order of the signal path. If you start with garbage it only goes down from there, if you're looking for the actual information the artist intended. ...
Why the hate for mcintosh amps?
What does design language mean? Maybe the font of their logo?
amplifier longevity
Many companies are now putting them on the back of the unit. If you are not going to be using it for an extended period of time, they should be turned off from an electrical safety standpoint. some very low current preamps or phono stages dont hav...
amplifier longevity
+1 @cakyol  Another thing to consider: if you are like me, sometimes you want to play a record or two for a relatively short listening session. Since SS amps can (and should) be left on all the time, they sound optimal much more quickly than tube...
Turntable upgrade recommendations: SME vs AMG vs Technics vs other
@jperry - my bad- I was mot aware AMG made arms. Also, havent heard much about them. Sounds like @dover has though.
