Totem Arro: Do I have enough power? The Totem ARROs will drive easily with 20-30 watts. You can always call Totem and ask.
Speaker recommendation - 3K budget Made a decison, yet? Sure is an amazing diversity of opinion out there, eh? I hope you can listen to some of the main suggestions, like Thiel and Maggie. They are VERY different, and your ears will tell you what you like. For a smallish room and y...
Tube amp for Sonus Faber Cremona The DeHavilland monoblock 845 amps are fantastically good, and quite a bargain at $6K. I would think their 30 watts are adequate for the Cremonas, and I would guess the match would be terrific. Reviewers at Positive Feedback rated their system 'be...
New Speakers 1k If you want monitors under $1000, don't overlook the new Von Schweikert VR1. Nice size, gorgeous exotic veneer finishes, exceptional sound.
Coincident Partial Eclipse vs Totem Forest The Coincident Partial Eclipse is recently upgraded to Mk. III, one of the few speakers at its price with a Scanspeak Revelator tweeter. I haven't heard the new model, but sure would like to. The Forest is getting a bit long in the tooth, I think....
Efficient speakers for my 2A3's........ The Cain and Cain speakers did sound very good at THE Show. And the Abby, I think, is only $1500, a steal. the Galante monitors are 95-96 db, made expressly for low-watt tubes. The Galante Rhapsody is $2295, and sounded very good with Sophia tube ...
New Speakers 1k Von Schweikert Audio has introduced a new monitor speaker at $995 nominal, with 'introductory' pricing. They intend it to be a world-beater, and it's worth checking. Not very tall, sort of stout in proportions, but nice looking and with a superb w...
Good one-box CDP or good DAC? Audionote makes two CD players, at $1500 and $2500, both with tube output stages, I believe. I've not heard them, but will soon. Might check jcaudio.com. There are favorable reports on the Cary 308, and the Cairn CDP, both around $1500.
Replacing jumper bars I've used the Mapleshade jumpers, and definitely would recommend them. Beware they are thin copper ribbons, and don't handle misuse well. I presently use Walker Audio cryo-treated silver wire...walkeraudio.com.
New or used amp? Lots of good suggestions from the cognoscenti! I think the first decision is whether you prefer tubes or solid state. I'm firmly rooted in the tube camp. At CES, Cary unveiled the Rocket 88, 4 KT88s, 20 watts triode, 40 in pentode. They used it to...
How does the AES compare with "real" Cary?i.e 845? As I noted in another post, Cary unveiled the Rocket 88 at CES, 4 KT88s, 20 watts triode, 40 in pentode. They used it to drive a B&W Nautilus 801, to demonstrate how it handles difficult loads...in triode mode!! Most important, it was extremel...
Best speaker for medium to low power tube amps?? I think the new Von Schweikert db 99 sets a new standard in efficient speakers, at $5995 or $6995. They were one of the best-of-show at CES, with the benefit of the $50K Wavac amp. The speakers have active amps for woofer 'boost', so require AC pl...
Recommend location and type for kitchen speakers In-walls at a budget level will not sound as good as independent speakers. In my opinion, you'll get fuzzy muzak. I'm looking at the new Swans M-20 active mini sat/sub system, nice sound for $200 (shown at CES, check av123.com), with intent of han...
Speaker vs. Room Size Coincident has revised its Triumph Signature monitor, price still $1199, and it may be extremely good. With claimed sensitivity of 94 dB, it is very friendly to low-watt amps. New tweeter and woofer (Vifa?), other improvements, nicely finished, co...
Small footprint speakers How about the new Coincident Partial Eclipse ($3000) or Victory ($4600, 97 dB, 14 ohms!) or even Conquest ($1900): coincidentspeaker.com. I'd also bet your Atma-sphere would be killer with the new Green Mountain 1.5 ($4800). |
