Any new tweaks out there? Umm, @csontos, putting 8awg power cord on an amplifier that’s being fed from a 15 amp circuit with 14awg Romex or a 20 amp circuit fed with 12awg Romex will do you no good at all. Look up Ohm’s Law, and you will see that the weakest link in electr...
CDs Vs LPs The video that @cleeds referred to is heavily slanted toward trusting that the conversion back to analog fills in the missing pieces with a perfectly synthesized replacement. The human ear is not capable of discretely differentiating the bonafide ...
CDs Vs LPs @dynaquest4 and @cleeds you are glossing over the fundamental issue with going digital: it does not capture the infinite range of undulations. Rather, the process quantizes the input program material at the sampling frequency, and then stores it a...
CDs Vs LPs CD is fundamentally flawed from a standpoint of being incapable of faithfully reproducing the original analog content without the staircase effect and artifacts. No amount of money spent on transports and DACs will ever change the fact that it use...
When should caps be replaced? @gs5556 after the caps were reformed, was there any change in measurements?
When should caps be replaced? My position is to replace caps that fail to meet their capacitance spec on a good multimeter or dedicated capacitance meter, of course if you see bulging or leakage on electrolytic capacitors, go ahead and replace them without thinking twice.
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC? Don’t agonize over the details that are so fine they defy the ability of the human organism (of relevant wear and tear) to differentiate between. In the words of Sheryl Crowe, “If It Makes You Happy....”
Filling audio rack tubes with sand, metal, grape nutz??? There is a product that is used to solidify latex paint for disposal. You might be able to use that with a couple quarts of inexpensive or surplus latex paint.
Which band IS really America's Greatest (rock & roll band)? Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, The Byrds, The Allman Brothers, CCR and The Travelling Willburies in no particular order. I’ve got a particular weakness for Rickenbacker electric 12 string guitars.
Best phone preamp for around $500? @asahitoro You need to ditch the wireless speakers and go with a conventional wired power amp to normal speakers. There are too many problems with wireless for true hifi. Solve that first, then look at buying a phonO stage. The wireless speakers m...
Difference in sound using different carts when digitizing vinyl record? @orpheus10 the staircase effect is the result of trying to approximate the analog signal from the turntable into a fixed scale of values that is used when digitizing. That approximation, or quantization, while good enough for some, is still only a...
Difference in sound using different carts when digitizing vinyl record? @inna nope, stylus is the only thing that reads the groove. That has infinitely more impact on sound quality than anything else that is not in the chain of custody of the signal.
Difference in sound using different carts when digitizing vinyl record? @chakster I agree with you. The biggest limiting factor is the cartridge and stylus profile. My experience with going from a very good low end MM cartridge with bonded elliptical stylus (AT95E) to a mid-range MM cartridge with nude mount line cont...
Difference in sound using different carts when digitizing vinyl record? @wcfeil ?
Difference in sound using different carts when digitizing vinyl record? @wcfeil, the definition of “average” is subjective. Would you consider an average cartridge a $60 AT95E or a $260 Grado Gold 2 or $750 Ortofon 2M Black, or a $1200 Sumiko Blackbird?Similarly for turntables and arms, what would you offer as “averag... |
