traveling need audio stores in NYC to audition
Actually I do have to disagree. Sound by Singer is pretty patient with folks who just want to hear stuff. They were very cordial to my wife and myself when we asked for a demon of the Basis 2500/Graham1.5/Cardas Heart even though I told the salesp...
The Little Tube Amp That Could?
Keep your eye out for a used Quicksilver 8417. They are extremely transparent, very tube like and I've heard them drive Maggies to decent levels. Typical prices are well within your range (althought the 8417 tubes are getting expensive).
Call me very, very lucky
I can beat that... my wife drove me about 2 hours cross state to pick up a pair of Hales. The two of us managed to fit the beasts into her old Honda Civic. When I scratched the upholstery on her car while removing the speakers, she said as long as...
what speakers do the best "disappearing act"??
I am still amazed by the kind of soundstage that the old Spica TC50 have. I own a pair of Alon IIs, Hales Sig II and Thiel CS3.5 but every now and then I just have to fire up the old Spicas. Paired with the Quicksilver KT88s or Counterpoint electr...
Girlfriend's mom threw my Cardas out with trash
> Girlfriend's mom threw my Cardas out with trash > You want humor? Tell Cardas what happened and ask > them if they'll send you a new one.A new set of cables or a new girlfriend?
SME,respect for the customer
Funny how there are companies that totally stand by the consumer (Classe and Conrad Johnson are exemplary for this) while others just don't give a darn (I had a short in a Kinergetics/Chiro subwoofer amp just a few weeks after the warranty expired...
CLASSE - Great amps or highly flawed?
I'm the current owner of a DR-15. I also have (in no particular order), a Krell 300i, VTL 100 monoblocks, Quicksilver MV60, and Counterpoint SA-20. The Classe represents the best compromise of the bunch... the Krell's are obnoxious if you don't de...
Rega and VPI tonearm owners - READ THIS
Someone mentione the Origin Live mods so I checked out their website. They claim that by far, the largest improvements in the stock Rega arms can be had with the addition of the counterweight (yup, more than internal rewiring, more than replacing ...
Contemplating vinyl, How hard is it to get LPs?
The one item that has been mentioned through this newsgroup that is absolutely indispensible for a vinyl fan is a record cleaning machine. I bought my VPI HW16.5 in 1992 and it has more than paid for itself (you won't believe the number of "used" ...
Contemplating vinyl, How hard is it to get LPs?
Hey Eastside_guy. If you happen to be on the East Coast, drive to the Princeton Record Exchange. You can get just about all the records from the band you mention for $3-5. Heck, many of these records can be found in their extensive 99 cents bin. I...
best preamp under 500 for cheap, poor student
At the NYC High End show, the YBA room featured a pair of JM Labs Utopias (what the heck are you doing with the Mezzos on a cheap student's budget) driven by the Audio Refinement (YBA) integrated. It was awesome... we kept coming back to the room ...
Any opinions on Classe Preamps?
I've seen many used Classe DR5s on Ebay and Audiogon going for $600. If that's not a bargain, I don't know what it. Harry Pearson (Editor of Absolute Sound) was right on the mark about this preamp.
Hales System II Signature
I just got a pair of VTL 100 watt monoblocks and they are a definite improvement over the Classe DR15 amps I had been using. I know that the speakers are wired with Cardas Golden cross but I'd be interested in hearing about your experiences with c...
Clearaudio TTs good or bad
Can't comment on sound quality (heard it at a store) but it is very susceptible to footfalls. Probably needs a Big Rock or Aurious (sp?) for optimal setup. If you believe the reviewer types, the VPI is supposed to sound "big and airy" and the Clea...
Upgrade or sell Infinity RSIIb speakers
Although I have never owned the RSIIb, I have heard them enough times to tell you that you won't be able to do significantly better without a substantial investment. I do know that the bass was a little sluggish so a "fast" solid state amp (a used...
