Spendor ST vs. B&W 803d vs. PMC PB1i ???
It would seem that after some thoughtful responses that Mark has gone.
Are We All Going Mad?
Seems in tweak land, silly prevails, especially at high prices.Like health and beauty products you can find every kind of imaginable snake oil and superstition to help cure the worst fears of paranoid audiophiles...
Wedding toasts... let's hear them
A toast to wives and mistresses...may they never meet!
Need settings for importing uncompr.CDs to Itunes
Maker sure CD Error correction is on and use a non lossy option (like apple lossless) to store what you burn (if you want to preserve the sound quality perfectly)
How do you judge your system's neutrality?
This is correct. A system that makes different recordings sound more distinct from eachother is more neutral than one that imposes its own sugar coated coloration on everything.
Woofers getting workout, but no bass
Do you know what is the port tuning? My guess it is between 25 and 35 Hz - otherwise you would not have such a problem even with vinyl, which I agree does tend to have some spurious LF due to the mechanical rotation of the disc once every two seco...
Woofers getting workout, but no bass
Very likely it is simply a matter of ported speakers and the sound is lower frequency than the port tuning frequency on the speakers. When you have sounds below the tuned port frequecny of your speakers then the woofers flap around uncontrollably a...
Bass rant
Back in the day theaters used some of the better transducers available, today they mostly buy cheap That was my point - $50 Made in China low quality wins everytime versus $1000 hand made and high quality from a boutique manufacturer for pro soud...
Bass rant
I pulled from theaters have drivers near 20-30-40 years old work fine the new stuff well...you find cooked voice coils or cones shreaded I am not surprised - woofer construction quality is appalling today.
Bass rant
With bass go big, large drivers, low excursions, hi-eff. Thus massive. If you cheat physics you get a conventional subwoofer and thus subwoofer sound to bass.Exactly large 12"+ drivers in a massive box is the way to go or else it is just BEP Boom...
Omni Speaker Options

Internet Radio sounds better than ripped CDs. Why
I have to turn up the volume a good 10dB in order to achieve the same volume level as IR. Both inputs are set to the default level of "0" in the AVR Then the IR radio is probably compressed - it usually is. If if it sounds better than perhaps the...
Internet Radio sounds better than ripped CDs. Why
Shadorne - My friend has the same theory as you do regarding the processing of IR stations. Perhaps that's the answer. Yes - radio stations have compressors and limiters and all kinds of stuff to create their "house-sound". Depending on the targe...
Bass rant
Indeed it is the first thing people look at on a speaker specification - deeper the better no matter how bad it sounds. Good accurate tight bass response with low distortion is like an ultra expensive finely aged french wine - most people would no...
Omni Speaker Options
Once again some wise words from Duke. The path length of 11 feet or the 10 msec rule of thumb is something you need to consider whatever speakers you have. The rule also applies where you sit (do not sit near a wall). This is one of the reasons th...
