What material best for a custom amp stand
I will go with stacks of different materials to dampen different frequencies. I will use maple block + BDR cones + acrylic + whatever you can think of. Metal will ring unless you damp it well. stay away from soft compound unless you are sure it ab...
VPI HRX
Graham will cut a hole for you to mount his arm last time I checked, but cost of this service is quite high due to large amount of metal VPI uses in the plinth. If I recall correctly, it's in the neighborhood of $500.If you ask VPI, they will ques...
Dynaudio Consequence UE
Stricken,Sounds like you think Dynaudio is the most neutral speaker on earth?I am not sure about that, I have owned enough speakers to know...
Dynaudio Consequence UE
I have a different take, I think you should try it.I have owned many Dynaudio speakers including the "baby" Consequence, Confidence 5. I loved the sound, but I do think Dynaudio can use more air and extension.I have also heard Elac with 4 Pi tweet...
The Harbeth phenomenon
Musical. How do you measure musical?Speakers that measure flat and neutral do not sound musical, people are not attached to them. Speakers with personality like Harbeth and Sonus Faber leave people mesmorized even though they are far from neutral....
EAR 324 vs Einstein The Turntable Choice
Einstein = tubey? that's the first I heard. I own Einstein gears and have compared it to many, I would not classify Einstein gears as tubey sounding.2nd hand info, I was told Einstein was a lot more resolving, transparent, and smoother than EAR324.
EAR 324 vs Einstein The Turntable Choice
I know someone who sold his EAR324 within a week after acquiring an Einstein, he thought the improvement was very significant and easily heard. Hopefully he will chime in.
Musical Fidelity fine-tuning service
guess not, they have to leave room for "improvement" and make more money off us...the price would be much easier to swallow if they are local. at $920 + shipping to England both way, shipping will cost nearly as much as upgrade cost.PCX does mods ...
VPI 10.5i mod....very worthwhile
are you referring to the screw inside the arm tube for fine VTF adjustment? w/o it, VTF adjustment is a pain especially if you also want to perfect azimuth.got any good hypothesis why the sound would improve by removing that screw?
VPI Classic or Notthingham Hyperspace?
To add to my previous reply.Nottingham arm, though also uni-pivot, is much more stable than VPI JMW. I have never seen the arm rock side-to-side, image has been very stable for me.In terms of service, both VPI and Nottingham are superb. One thing I...
VPI Classic or Notthingham Hyperspace?
let me give you a different perspective.I have not heard or seen a VPI Classic, but I do own a SSM Ref with rim drive and super platter. VPI is a very direct, immediate, and lively sounding TT, JMW 10 arm (or any JMW arms) is a pain to adjust if y...
Rogue vs ARC
ARC builds nice equipment, but their house sound is also a love/hate relationship. I have owned their upper end pre amps and older VT series power amps, I don't miss them either.Like Chrissain pointed out, what great built quality when you are for...
VPI Classic Platter
Alun's observation makes sense, TNT is known to sound warm and classic platter might be the ticket to compensate its short coming.it's often best to combine several different materials to achieve a balance sound, maybe that's why Scout was so succ...
BAT Thoughts.....
I have numbers of tube amps in my house, BAT tube amps do run hot but not much hotter than other tube amps. amount of heat BAT 75SE produces is equivalent to ARC, VTL, or SF 100 wpc tube amp and drive capability is similar, so comparison between d...
speakers that work well with class D amp?
I had my Spectron hooked up to several pairs of speakers before, overall I like the Spectron with Verity Parsifal Encore the most and Maggie MG 3A the least.Class-D amps in general have pristine, transparent, and clean presentation, mating with sp...
