Which is better : Marantz AV9000 or Anthem AVM2 ?
I had a Marantz AV9000 for a while and did not dig it too much. I thought that it was a step back sonically from the Parasound 1800 that i had just before it. Like anything else though, you will have to see if the units you consider have the featu...
Isolation Sand Boxes
You guys are all GOOFS !!!! Everyone knows that sand will add "grain" and "grit" to a system. It can also sound very "dry" and "bleached". Your best bet is to use clay straight from the banks of the Mississippi. The soundstage will fill in with fa...
Pre-Amp Power Supply Upgrade ????
Other than a higher price and a more crowded layout, what does that exhorbitant amount of capacitance buy you in a preamp though ? Sean>
Quad ESL 63's worth repair?

Best "Used" Audiophile speakers for 1000-1500
How big of a room, what type of music, any specific placement restraints, what type of gear are you running, specific preferences, etc ??? Anybody can make suggestions but whether or not they would be suitable to your situation requires more info....
Adcom - A Good Value?? Auctions risky??
Can't speak for the 5500, but the 5802 is MUCH better than the 5800. All of these amps are relatively brawny and will make a lot of sound for the money spent, but I wouldn't call any of these amps "musical".As to buying used or on an auction, take...
Any good HT websites...
Thanks for the suggestions folks. I checked them all out. I knew about "Secrets" but the other two were new to me. I'll have to drop by and do some searching on them. Sean>
Turntable suggestions?
I'm not saying that the Sota is the "end all" of tables by any means. Just wanted to pass on info that you or others might find interesting and "food for thought". Not many folks have actually had the opportunity to do what my friend did. Sean>
Pre-Amp Power Supply Upgrade ????
I'm with Scott on this one. There are some old amps that would produce 200+ wpc @ 8 ohms with less than 10,000 uF's of capacitance in them. As such, 50,000 uF's is more than enough for any preamp. Keep in mind that if you turn this preamp off and ...
Buy a hi-end CD player/transport now?
The "blurb" in Stereophile was a small review in Sam Tellig's February column if you want to check it out. Sean>
bi-wiring center speaker
You won't have ANY problem doing that other than you'll have to split the signal to both inputs of the amp. This is not a big deal IF your processor has two outputs for center ( as some processors do ). Otherwise, you'll have to use a "T" or "Y" c...
Buy a hi-end CD player/transport now?
Buy something that will offer you the most bang for the buck. This will hold you over while waiting and give you something enjoyable to listen to in the meantime. As have many of the magazine reviewers, i would suggest something that upsamples. Th...
Top Ten Speakers of All Time?
I don't know if i've heard 10 different speakers that have absolutely amazed me. As such, i'll have to stick with speakers that have "intrigued" me over the years. This does not mean that i think that they are the finest made or that i've even hea...
What time do you wear?
Ever put your hand into a device that is running about 60 KV ( Kilovolts )with a watch strapped to your wrist ? No ? Me neither and i never will. I either break them, loose them, they are in the way or are a safety hazard. Give me a sun-dial any d...
Turntable suggestions?
Break apart a VPI and a Sota and then decide which one is built better and will deal with "real world" conditions. Keep in mind that ANY vibration transferred through the chassis to the stylus / arm WILL cause tracking distortion. One of my buddie...
