SACD - what gives?
I have to agree with all of the points being made. I probably have about a half dozen SACD's and that's it. I'm not buying recordings that i don't want to listen to, regardless of how good they are supposed to sound and / or the quality of "re-mas...
Wash, Cut, Polish & Demagnetize
Yowza !!! I can't believe that the price on the Audio Desk's went up that much. Believe me, i did not pay that much for mine. What i did pay for it was still too much for what it is. Then again, the amount of time that it would take to build somet...
Question on 2 channel vs 5 channel amps ?
That's a good point Misskuma. I did not think about such things as i have the same amps driving the same series of speakers all the way around. A perfect example of first hand experience being a good teacher and a learned pupil sharing their knowl...
Preamp is an amplifier too, right???
I agree Pbb. The differences between a preamp with a phono stage ( a "real" preamp to me ) and the active line stages / passive line stages of today all seem to blend together due to a blurring of terminology. I'm sure that there are others that f...
Some Good & Helpful Info Here
There are some very noticeable errors in this text, but otherwise, it is very informative. While i am limited on time right now, i am hoping that someone will point out the errors so that this thread can be archived in a FAQ's section. Sean>
Question on 2 channel vs 5 channel amps ?
I agree with Misskuma. Amps should have similar voices, at least across the front ( l, r and center ) channels. You can use what you want across the rears as it is less critical, at least for movies. It does become more critical if you are using t...
What causes phase shifts...Sean?
I just ordered a reference grade book on electronics that is supposed to be both excellent and very easy to understand. If it turns out that it is as good as all of the hype says it is, i'll post something listing the name and good places to pick ...
Preamp is an amplifier too, right???
Tube preamps typically have a far higher maximum output level than the mass majority of SS designs. As such, the only thing that i can think of is that the tonal balance has shifted due to different power transfer / loading conditions and you seem...
Should I leave my equipment on ?
I'll only add that some gear, such as high bias AB or Class A amps will pull considerable power all the time, even at idle. This means that they have to be able to dissipate heat. Since they do tend to run hot, these devices tend to show the most ...
Can I/Should I Bridge my power amp?
When an amp is put into bridged mode, it effectively sees half of what the rated impedance of the speaker is. In this case, a nominal 4 ohm load would look like a 2 ohm load to the bridged amp. While the Parasound might drive such a load without m...
Cable run in burn in time
On the Audiodharma, the load resistance is far lower than it should be for interconnects. This can cause a far higher level of current to pass through them than they would ever see in any given audio based circuit. If the sonics are being "damaged...
Where can I get quality cassettes.
You might try J&R Music World or some such similar place. Just a thought. Sean>
Why my system has detail but no body & warm vocal?
Your speakers are too close together unless you sit right on top of them. Unless you do sit nearfield, this also tells me that you need to spend more time experimenting with placement. Changing the stands can also affect tonal balance. What you he...
Cable run in burn in time
Disregard the salesman. As a side note, oxidation occurs between connections that are not moved and / or re-seated over extended periods of time. As such, it is a good idea to carefully pull plugs / break connections and re-seat them occassionally...
Bias setting question
As bias is reduced, so is gain and linearity. So long as you've got plenty of gain available and you can't hear a difference, there is nothing wrong with what you want to do. The upside to this would obviously be less thermal stress on the compone...
