Apogee Centaur Major or Magnepan MG-20/20.1 ?
The mid/high ribbon for the Slant and the Major is more or less the same, but the woofer isn't: the Slant sports an 8" Vifa woofer, where the Major is fitted with a 10" Peerless woofer. Hard to compare the low-end performance...
Apogee Centaur Major or Magnepan MG-20/20.1 ?
Tough one. I've hear Maggies 1.6 (not the 20 or 20.1) and own the Majors. To my ears, the latter is the best sounding speaker I know, except maybe for Apogee Scintilla's. But offcourse I haven't heard all speakers around.Crossover between the 10" ...
Phono-pre
Thanx for the responses. I ended up with a Sphinx Phono Equalizer, a flexible beast with three different gain setting: 47, 58 and 66 dB and switchable load- and capacitance settings. The authorative, very detailled sound fits my taste and system p...
Efficiency of speakers?
Because you're interested in cone speakers only, my experiences are only half usefull to you since I own a hybrid cone/ribbon design. Efficiency is low, due to the closed housing for the woofer and the low efficiency of the ribbon. The low-end is ...
Replacement pwr supply for Aragon 24k
Would that be Steve Donaldson? You can reach him through the Aragon-forum.
subwoofers and panels don't mix
Although it's not really a subwoofer/ribbon combi, I feel that Apogee has managed to combine a cone/ribbon succesfully around the '90's. I'm not saying my Apoge Centaur Major is perfect - it just isn't. But the transition between woofer and ribbon...
New TT or old
Sell the B&O and scrape all the money together you can. Then buy a new (secondhand) recordplayer and cartridge, and spend some money, as Dean suggests, on a record cleaner.
Loud bad noises
Have you tried your setup without the MF tube buffer? The problem could be in that unit as well...
Any issues with a "mint" PS Audio 4.6 pre?
I have the 5.6, which I presume has some similarities with the 4.6. Nice build and good quality components throughout, so if the 4.6 has been properly used there's nothing to worry about. I partly agree with Eldartford: phonostage is good, and IMH...
Replacement pwr supply for Aragon 24k
Aha. I have the Aragon 24K with the IPS, the Improved Power Supply. This wasn't standard, you had to buy it separately. It was said to improve upon the standard powersupply, which you probably have. I have seen thatone in real life, so I can't tel...
What is your most beautiful component?
That would be my Kiseki cartridge, although I like the looks of my entire turntable...http://aycu34.webshots.com/image/30713/2004150184027539252_rs.jpg
Replacement pwr supply for Aragon 24k
@ Penonome: the screws are in the rubber thingies at the underside of the powersupply. Unscrew them and you can slide the triangular top of. Then you should see this (click link):http://aycu06.webshots.com/image/29405/2001951001830719888_rs.jpgThe...
Thoughts on PS Audio 5.6 pre
Thanx for the responses, guys. The reason it was so cheap is because the casing and some knobs are scratched and the screw to ground the turntable broke of. Technically it's in pretty good shape, none of the caps need replacing. I'll hook it up in...
Have You Heard the Northstar CD Combo?
I've heard the 'cheaper' combo with the Model 192 DAC. I'm not too fond about the transport though - my former PS Audio Lamba 2 SE sounded better with the 192 DAC, so I kept that combo. Since the PS Audio died I had to replace it, and still the No...
Why are we so passive?
I've worked with both active and passive loudspeakers, and both can sound great. Or terrible... design and execution are, as always, the keywords. For myself I'm considering going more or less active. I'd like to purchase a second (Threshold) power...
