What is the average dealer mark up?
First off, markup and discount are not the same number.  If a dealer is getting a 50% discount from the manufacturer from MSRP and prices at MSRP his markup is 100%.  Second to the poster above that said car dealer markups are similar, that is wro...
Bose 901
Amar Bose set out to make a speaker that reproduced the sound of an orchestra playing in a concert hall where the majority of the sound reaching the listener is reflected.  When you hear acoustic music being played in a hall the pinpoint imaging m...
Stereo Receivers from the past...
Nothing wrong with new stereo receivers and integrated amps.   Vintage stuff is OK but not as massively superior as vintage fans like to believe.  I am 62, been there, done that.  I have a garage system based on a vintage receiver and a different ...
Should I buy a VPI SCOUTMASTER. I OWN 25 RECORDS.
It depends on what kind of music you listen to.  If all of it was recorded in the digital era, 1990 on or so, then vinyl is a waste of time.  There is no way that inserting an amplifier, cutting lathe, record pressing plant, cartridge, and a phono...
Help me understand John Coltrane .... seriously.
No one can make you like something you don't.  I love swing era jazz.  Most bop and post bop stuff leaves me cold.  I watched Sonny Rollins going on for 10 minutes with his horn at a jazz festival and it just sounded like random notes to me.   I l...
Frustrated with Vinly
Get used to it.  I have stopped buying new music on vinyl.  Digital is consistently better and most of it was digitally mastered anyway.  Adding a DA, cutting lathe, pressing plant, and a phono cartridge to the playback chain is not going to incre...
Should I still buy a CD player? Suggest one?
The only CD player you need is the one in the computer you run your server software on.  Streaming uncompressed digital files to a DAC sounds the same as playing them from a CD player and is a lot more convenient.
All-in-one: $1k Marantz or $2k Hegel?
The Powernode sounds "small" driving what?  How big is this office?  How loud do you want music to be playing while you work.  Too loud for me and I can't think about things other than the music.  I assume an office has a computer.  If I was doing...
Advantages of owning equipment from major audio brands vs. boutique shops?
Manufacturing has economies of scale.  Many major brands hire competent engineers, including professional audio companies.  Boutique audio companies will tell you it's as much about art as engineering and amplifiers and DAC's have to be "voiced" l...
An Epiphany
What the OP is talking about is the audiophile BS about the pressure of the stylus bringing the vinyl up to melting temperature and the LP need hours to recover before being played again.   It's always been nonsense.
MM Cartridge for music on the heavier side
https://www.amazon.com/Audio-Technica-VM740ML-MicroLine-Turntable-Cartridge/dp/B01M6ZUXKE VM740ML is what I would get, if I didn't already have one.   The Shibata version is just under $400 and the ML is $329. I don't think MM cartridges really ...
What is $5,000 worth today, and is it better than 1,600 in the 80's?
Given the advances in audio tech, I would be surprised if you had to spend much more than $2000 to equal the 1980 $1600 system. Not necessarily in size and number of components but for sound quality. The caveat is that if your into vinyl it’s anot...
Can an IC based amp be considered 'high end'?
The audiophile world has had the idea that discrete designs are better for a long time.  If it was ever true, it isn’t now.
Need a SACD DVD player on a low budget.
The Yamaha universal players are good machines.  I have a BDA-1060 which is a bit out of your price range.  Here is its little brother which is in your range brand new with a warranty. https://www.amazon.com/Yamaha-BD-S681-Blu-ray-Disc-Player/dp/B...
Developing critical listening skills
Who cares? Unless you are going to get a job making audio equipment or writing for a magazine, it’s a waste of time. For the non-professional, critical listening is a disease. I listen to enjoy the music, not to nitpick my equipment until my bank ...
