pre-amp for original Marantz Model 9 mono amps?
I used Marantz 9 amplifiers for 20+ years and was very pleased with the match of a Conrad-Johnson PV-9 over the last 10 years I lived with these wonderful creatures. Today, I would be very inclined to consider combining these amplifiers with Aesth...
Does this mean I need Pre Amp w/ AtmaSpheres?
From your description, this sounds like a system synergy problem with the Wadia not able to drive the Atma-Spheres correctly when the subs are paralled to the Wadia output. It sounds an awful lot like you've created an impedance mismatch when the ...
Whats on your turntable tonight?
Laptop in the listening chair is the only way to go! Congratulations, Spencer. My only problem is that my "click, click, click" on the keyboard drives my otherwise very tolerant spouse out of the listening room: Definitely NOT a good thing relativ...
Whats on your turntable tonight?
Tonight:Cat Stevens: Teaser and the Firecat, MSFL 1-244 - had to pull this out and play it to check my recollection of its sound quality given a very curious post tonight in the Vinyl Asylum. My copy sounds just like I remembered it: really really...
Preamp with near-reference quality built in phono?
OK, I'm confused, where does this comment come from in the context of the cordial discussion we've been having in this thread, Microjack? I'm confused by your intent in saying this.Sound effects are another matter and any number of alternatives ma...
Microphonics of tubes
Sorlowski, what you are experiencing is simply part of life with tubes. As you've discovered, the microphonics is due to the tube, not the equipment. And, it can be variable from tube to tube. The cause is the internal construction of the tube: th...
Phono Stage for Conrad-Johnson CAV50
I don't know the specifics of the K9 cartridge, but the current Linn Adikt moving magnet cartridge (which replaces the K9 in the Linn lineup) has an output of 6.5mv which is a very high output cartridge. I suspect the older K9 has similar high out...
$800 Cartridge Shootout and Upgrade Path
Congratulations on reaching your resolution, Atar1. You will have a very rewarding and enjoyable analog front end. Best wishes!
Phono Stage for Conrad-Johnson CAV50
Consider a used Conrad-Johnson PV-9A (preferred) or a PV-10 full function preamp. Both would be a good match for the rest of your system and give you very good phono stage. For either, you'd need to best off using a cartridge with an output of 1.0...
Whats on your turntable tonight?
Zaikesman, glad to see you joining this ongoing conversation! I, too, look forward to more discussion of MUSIC and recordings. Love the story you shared. :-)Joe, we're just going to have to get you a little 15-incher on a cart with wheels...
Whats on your turntable tonight?
Joe, that's what the mute button on your TV is for! Watch the game, listen to great music. You don't really need some announcer explaining that play-by-play breath-taking action on the screen do you? :-)As I listen to a great performance of Dvorak...

Well-recorded Satie?
OK, I'll be the contrarian: Aldo Ciccolini, EMI ASD 2389Nothing wrong with the piano tone heard here on LP, even the Angel pressing sounds good. ;-).
Whats on your turntable tonight?
Tonight, more Roy Wallace engineered Decca marvels from the 1950s until about 1964:Borodin: Sym 2 & 3, Ansermet/OSR, London CS 6126 (Speakers Corner reissue). OK, this one has a touch of upper mid-range brightness, probably some resonance freq...
Preamp with near-reference quality built in phono?
Agree with Wellfed's recommendation of the Atma-Sphere MP-1 Mk.II. Be aware that, afaik, it is fully balanced end-to-end with no RCA jack inputs/outputs.
