"does a source really make the difference" Is it not the source the rest of the system is reproducing?
Soundstage depth and width
Timbre is more important than depth or width, but even though I consider depth and width an effect I prefer width.
Preamp for someone who's never needed one?
You needed a preamp you just didn't know it. Try an Audio Research SP-11, SP-14 or SP-15. These preamps are designed for phone and they have separate gain and attenuator controls. The Rothwell attenuators did not work for me either. I was attempti...
Noice from fan in Audio Research VT 100 MK III
Whatever you do, do not disconnect the fan as previously mentioned. If Audio Research put a fan in your amp you can bet it is there for a good reason.
preamp advice.. quad 909 + esl-63
Look for a used Quad 99. Mixing and matching does not work with Quad electronics. By using the matching preamp you will be assured tonal accuracy and averall musicality. Included is a balanced "QuadLink" bus cable to minimize cost and concern abou...
How do the Magnepan 3.6r compare to the new 1.7
Macdadtexas, Some people are more sensitive to a speaker's coherency than others.
How do the Magnepan 3.6r compare to the new 1.7
Elizabeth, It could be the reviewers who claim to hear this discontinuity are too close to the speakers. With large speakers it is important to create some distance to get a proper blend of the drivers. Big speakers are made for big rooms. They ar...
Scott amp update/speaker question
The manual that covers Yamaha NS10, NS15, NS18, NS20, NS30, NS20A and NS30A does not give a sensitivity rating. My guess is they are very efficient. The impedance is 8 ohms and maximum continuos power is 30 watts. I had excellent results running L...
DAM Broken tube?
I have had many power tubes rattle and never had a problem.
Vandersteen 1's and Speaker Cables
I agree with John. Actually, Audioquest in general works well with Vandersteens.
Should i go Boulder 1060 or Jeff Rowland 625
Since you already have a Rowland preamp the answer to your question should be pretty simple. If you buy the Rowland amp you are assured you will have a match between amp and preamp. Resale would be the only other consideration.
Question: Is it "Tone Arm" or is it "Tonearm"?
Tonearm, when in doubt google it.
What are some good tube amps that rock? KT88's?
Since you like playing your music loud maybe the grit you hear is your amplifier clipping. If that's the case maybe you should think about a more efficient speaker.
Best solid state amp for B&W 801 Matrix Series 2
Dave_72, About the only thing a Levinson 23 and a No. 20 have in common is the name. However, the 23 is not a bad amp either. If you hated the 23 you most likely had a bad match. At any rate, it sounds like you already had your mind made up on Bry...
Best solid state amp for B&W 801 Matrix Series 2
The best I have heard with B&W 801 is Mark Levinson No. 20.
