Audio Research REF2 MK 1 Vs. MK 2
The REF 2 MK II has 6) 6H30's, 1) 6L6, and 1) 5AR4. The only reason for a "tubey" sounding REF 2 MK I is "tubey"(microphonic) tubes. If the tubes are rolled for accurate/transparent, NOS 6922's, the sound will be also. Siemens and Telefunken CCa's...
Antique Sound Lab Hurricane MK1 vs MK2
Carlsdg- Keep in mind everyone's tastes and systems are different. It would behoove you to try a pair, connected to the equipment you own, to determine your satisfaction with them. Further: The people that raved about them did so based on the desi...
Which cables and ics allow the biggest soundstage?
You don't mention what lengths are required in you system, which will make a HUGE difference in the price. I'm an absolute accuracy, sound staging, imaging, transparency freak. Thus far the best presentation I've found has been through Kimber's KS...
Antique Sound Lab Hurricane MK1 vs MK2
The Hurricanes were, at one point(around 2003), "updated" by replacing the(eight per channel) .22uF/400V MIT(Reliable) MultiCaps with a paper in oil capacitor made by Illusion. Seems they lost their magic at that point. The builder has since seen ...
6SN7 tube GTA vrs GTB
Having them tested for noise is VERY important/imperative if they are to be used in a pre-amp, mic or phono stage. MUCH less so in power amp circuits.

Hello Mr M: I suppose the value of those tubes would have to be judged by one's love for the sound of music. I thought nothing of spending $1300.00 for a pair of Kimber KS-1130s for the transparency they afforded me(two years ago), and $680.00 on ...
"Budget" cable advice, please
Almost anything will sound better than 20 year old Monster Cable. For what you are investing, Kimber Heroes(pre-owned) and 8TC would make you VERY happy. That's providing you are interested in transparency, and not a fuzzy/euphonic presentation.
ARC Ref 3: Tung-Sol 6550 in power supply?
That's what I inferred from your second post(describing what you were hearing). My own experience with the sound of live(and my love for it) has only been about 35 years as a musician/sound tech/electronics repairman and modder. Seems much of the ...
Best way to add remote volume control to tube pre.
The Placette Passive remote can be purchased for less than the Space-Tech unit on the used market and utilizes 1% matched Vishay resistors throughout. I'm certain if Space-Tech went to that expense(and attention to quality), they would advertise t...
ARC Ref 3: Tung-Sol 6550 in power supply?
I agree Mr G- And I'll bet those "personal and unstated parameters" are too often one's familiarity with the real thing(live music). A subject that will get a post severly bashed in these forums. What a shame that we should take solace in those th...
ARC Ref 3: Tung-Sol 6550 in power supply?
Hello again Guido- It's gratifying to see you validated my original post in so very short a time. KUDOS and happy listening!!
Best way to add remote volume control to tube pre.
The only signal degradation with a Placette will be via the extra interconnects/connections. I tried a Creek OBH-10 to see if my CDP had the output to drive my amps, prior to purchasing the Placette Passive Linestage. The Creek units are not trans...
Help - Nice small dipole or bipole for HT wanted.

Power on tube amp without tubes?
The practice of powering amps up to check voltages before installing tubes has always been the rule(after the initial build), and that wouldn't do any damage to the equipment. That's providing one has the experience/knowledge not to get one's-self...
